About the Author
Walt Wolfram is William C. Friday Distinguished Professor at North Carolina State University, and author or co-author of 17 books and over 250 articles, including The Development of African American English (with Erik Thomas, Blackwell 2002) and American Voices (edited with Ben Ward, Blackwell 2006).

Natalie Schilling-Estes is Associate Professor of Linguistics at Georgetown University. She is co-author of Hoi Toide on the Outer Banks: The Story of the Ocracoke Brogue (with Walt Wolfram, 1997) and co-editor of The Handbook of Language Variation and Change (with J. K. Chambers and Peter Trudgill, Blackwell 2002).

Much more than just a description of American English

The book offers much more than the title suggests. It is not only an up-to-date presentation of American English and its varieties ("white varieties," African American Vernacular English, Native American Vernacular English, and even Creole varieties). These varieties rather serve as sources of examples for a volume that covers virtually every branch of sociolinguistics, including even political issues and suggestions for dialect teaching and language reforms. The titles of the chapters are: "The Reality of Dialects," "Why Do Languages Have Dialects," "Levels of Dialect," "Dialects in the United States: Past, Present, and Future," "Regional Dialects," "Social and Ethnic Dialects," "Gender and Language Variation," "Dialects and Style," "The Patterning of Dialect," "On the Application of Dialect Studies," "Dialect Awareness in the School and Community"). The authors juxtapose a series of definitions, theories, and other issues in a fresh and sometimes untraditional manner, never forgetting to take the historical perspective into account. They are conscious of the problems inherent in generalizations and have managed to find the right middle course between a too simplistic and a too complicating presentation. At the end of each section the reader will find suggestions for further research and activities as well as further reading recommendations (including addresses of Internet sites, too). Another plus of the book is that the reading recommendations are accompanied by critical annotations. The main body is followed by an "Inventory of Socially Diagnostic Structures," which consists of a very informative list of linguistic structures and their correspondent variants in a number of American English dialects. At the end of the book the reader will also find a valuable glossary of (socio)linguistic terms. As already mentioned, it is very interesting to find out that some of the authors' statements break with the content, or structure, of many traditional works of this kind, such as the sub-definitions of 'standard,' or the observations on language use and pragmatics, much too often neglected elsewhere. The book is written in a very readable style and can warmly be recommended not only to teachers and students of languages and linguistics, but to everyone interested in sociolinguistic problems in the United States.

A great resource

This book is great for the beginning language policy students. There is more information than you probably want about regional and cultural dialects. It is probably too basic for intermediate to advanced linguistic students, but for those who are curious about how language varies from person to person in different situations, I highly recommend it.

It is an extremely interesting book that is completely informative about the history of the English language and how it not only came to be what it is today but predictions about what it will become in the future. The prose is very easy to read and you find yourself pronouncing dialects out loud to just get a good idea of what it would sound like if you were from that part of the world. This was a recommended book by my professor and I was not going to purchase it but I'm glad I did considering the other two required texts are not as interesting!

Review of William's Roman Homosexuality

The second edition opens with a great little introduction by Professor M. Nussbaum, who helps tie this work contextually to similar works in the study of sexuality (Greek, Roman and modern) written in the last twenty years. She demonstrates the reasons for reading this work in particular.

Williams is as thorough-going as I could ask for. His work not only provides an understanding of the dynamics of Roman non-heterosexual practices, it also illuminates the basic framework of theories of desire and love, as well as the apparent legal structures surrounding and checking the sexual acts described. The work is a successful partner to Dover's Greek Homosexuality.

William's work also introduces the reader to much of the Roman sexual vocabulary, and includes scores of passages from relevant verse. I'm tackling Catullus just now, and, for better or worse, I understand precisely what it means to tell a Roman, "irrumabo"--both literally and in light of its social implications.

The book also attempts an analysis of male gender. Since this isn't totally coupled with a male sexual practices (in my opinion), Williams is smart not to press the point to dearly. It isn't his central thesis, yet he develops it so that he can correctly tie it to the thesis he's defending.

Excellent book!

I first discovered this gem in my school's library. Intrigued by the cover and the great reviews it received I decided to give it a try. I must say that Williams does a great job of sorting out the details and different aspects of Roman homosexuality. He infuses the work of previous scholars while offering his own. The book is both serious yet humorous making it a source of history that can be read by many. I highly recommend this book to anyone with desire to know more about the history of Roman homosexuality.

Scholarly and Insightful and Entertaining

The subject of the book was what first drew my attention along with the beautiful cover depicting the Roman myth of the relationship between Zeus (in the form of an Eagle) and the beautiful Ganymede. This book is NOT for the common man. The work is extremely well written but scholarly in content and diction. You must be well read to fully reap the benefits of such a work. I consider myself to be well read, having a bachelor's degree in history, but this book proved its worth when I realized there was still a wealth of information about ancient Roman society which I was completely unaware existed. Well researched and founded in fact--not speculation. The book proves once and for all that the society many have deemed depraved, was not that at all. If you have any interest in this subject matter or just a sense of curiosity, this work is for you. But be warned; it is not easily read without the necessary educational background.

The only Chinese Herbal book that really EXPLAINS things

I have several good books on Chinese herbs, but Teeguarden's book is the only one with full, complete explanations. He includes:
1. Section on the five elements (water-wood-fire-metal-earth), what "cool" and "warm" and "yin" and "yang" mean.
2. Section describing the most-used and important herbs like Ginseng and Dong Kwai, Ma Huang and many others. This section includes photos of the herb shown as they are sold in herb shops, tips on getting the best herbs, the Chinese name (and Korean, sometimes) The names are both Romanized and in Chinese characters, with the Latin name, and the active chemical components and their effects.
3. Formulae for herb tonics, because Chinese herbs are not used alone but in combination (and the reasoning behind the combination.)
4. Philosophy of Chinese medicine for health (prevention versus cure) and much more.
The book is very readable, too. While I very much like other books I own, this one is such a classic, I consider it a MUST-HAVE if you are interested at all in Chinese medicine and definitely the first one you should own.

A classic book on Superior Tonic Herbalism

What sets this book apart from other books on Chinese herbal medicine is its philosophy of using "superior tonic herbs" to improve the quality of one's life and health. This book is not about treating disease, but rather about achieving radiant health from a Taoist perspective.

This is Ron Teeguarden's first of several books on the subject of Chinese Medicine and in my opinion is a classic. (Note, I have not read his latest book The Ancient Wisdom of the Chinese Tonic Herbs.)

Having formally studied Traditional Chinese Medicine for two years and Ayurvedic medicine for two years I can unequivocally state this is the book to start learning practical do it yourself Chinese herbalism for increased energy, creativity, spiritual growth and happiness. It contains many useful and effective herbal formulas that would not be otherwise accessible to the non-professional. If you want to learn Chinese medicine for the treatment of disease this is not the book to get, rather the focus is on tonic herbs and their correct application. (While tonic herbs are widely used for deficiency diseases in Chinese Medicine, not enough herbs, formulas and theory are given in this book for treating complex deficiency conditions/diseases.) This book shows one how to gradually work towards radiant health through the application of Superior Tonic Herbalism from a Daoist perspective. All the practical and theoretical knowledge needed is covered.

The cost of the herbs involved ranges from $.50 / ounce to $200 / ounce (retail). To seriously put to use the knowledge contained in this book would require having a selection of about 20-35 herbs. Though one could start out with as few as one to three herbs. The primary emphasis is on learning how to mix and cook the bulk tonic herbs into teas (decoctions). These teas range in taste from sweet, sour, and pungent to bitter. (There is one chapter devoted to the use of commercially prepared tonics, but it is not the major focus of the book.) The companies listed to order herbs from are now out of date, but a search of the Internet will reveal more current sources.

Traditionally the tonic herbs are divided into four categories: 1) qi (chi) tonics, 2) yang tonics, 3) yin tonics and 4) blood tonics. Ron Teeguardian covers three additional categories: 1) chi moving/regulating herbs, 2) blood moving/regulating herbs and 3) organ-meridian tonics. The book covers 35 herbs in detail, including buying tips and a black and white photo of each herb.

The section on ginseng (a qi tonic) is very informative and contains insights and perspectives not readily found elsewhere. Also covered in detail is dang shen (Codonopsis pilosula) a safe and low cost ginseng substitute. The coverage of some the "minor" tonic herbs is unique as the longevity properties of these "minor" tonic herbs are usually overlooked or ignored by most texts on the subject.

The theory section is kept simple, but detailed enough to be practically useful. While Chinese Tonic Herbs discusses modern scientific research on Chinese herbs, the formulas and theory is geared toward building up the three Taoist treasures: shen (spirit), jing (essence, refined reproductive energy) and qi (functional energy). When these three treasures are built up a person will have a strong reserve of adaptogenic energy to effectively deal with stress and changing life conditions.

The book has a few flaws. The taxonomy is a little weak as some of the scientific names used are outdated. The scientific information given is out of date and even flawed in places. The number of yin, yang, qi and blood tonics covered is somewhat limited. Perhaps not enough information is given on how to correctly distinguish between yin, yang, qi and blood deficiency conditions. Also, not enough contraindications are given for each of the herbs discussed. While superior tonic herbs are generally very safe and non toxic, it is possible to use them incorrectly and put one's body into a deeper state of imbalance. Dosage information is somewhat weak, but sufficiently covered if one studies the book carefully. Usually only relative proportions for each herb are given for a formula.

Ron Teeguarden was personally trained by a daoist master visiting from South Korea in the 1970s. His book is part of a real living tradition of Superior Tonic Herbalism.

While several volumes would be needed to do Superior Tonic Herbalism justice this book is an excellent beginning.

(A useful adjunct book is "Yoga of Herbs" by Frawley and Lad, which covers Western, Ayurvedic and some Chinese herbs from an Ayurvedic perspective. Yoga of Herbs focuses both on the treatment of disease and tonification and rejuvenation. It covers some of the spiritual aspects of herbs according to the Ayurvedic perspective. Both Yoga of Herbs and Chinese Tonic Herbs embrace the life energy model of herbalism as opposed to the more modern pharmacological model.)

The real secret of tonic herbalism is doing it carefully (e.g., don't over do it) and steadily every day -- this book will definitely help one get started on this path, by both the knowledge contained within, and the truly inspiring stories and passion of the author. Superior Tonic Herbalism is Ron Teeguardian's passion and mission in life and this book follows from this.

A must-read...don't miss the last chapter

I found Ron Teeguarden's new book "Radiant Health" to be the most easily understood and comprehensive book on the subject that I've ever read. Many Westerners, during the last several decades, have become aware of the benefits of Chinese Medicine, specifically acupuncture. This book brings to light the extremely effective system of Chinese Herbal Tonics, which is an ancient tradition of promoting and maintaining a state of radiant health rather than treating disease once it has developed. Considering the cost of health care to both individuals and society at large, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in maintaining their own personal health or providing for the health of society. Not only does Ron Teeguarden explain in detail the properties and uses of each of the tonic herbs but he has a rare talent of making very complex and profound concepts easily understandable to the layman. One suggestion that I would make is not to miss the last chapter called "Six Lessons The Tonic Herbs Have Taught Me." Some readers might get bogged down in the middle of the book where each of the herbs is described. If that happens to you, just skip to the last chapter and then pick up the book, from time to time, to read about an herb or two. The last chapter was my favorite because it beautifully expresses the degree to which the tonic herbs can transform life and raise it to a pinacle that is the birthright of every human being.

This was a huge hit with me!

I love everything that Nicole has written. I think she has out done herself with this one! Anton is Russian Mafia. He is tough, oozes power and doesn't care who he hurts and will destroy them if he has to. He is also in prison serving time for blowing up his arch enemies place. His families vendetta with the Lagotti's has been going as long as he can remember. Then one day he finally gets his chance to tie up loose ends with little help of an aspiring reporter. Sabrina is a lovely girl wanting to make herself know in the world of journalism. She is going to interview Anton. He has refused any interview's until know. She has a little secret though she is a Lagotti his sworn enemy. What she doesn't know is that she is a pawn in his game and what he doesn't know yet is she will change his life forever.
This is such a great book! I love Anton and his I don't care attitude, he is raw and real. Sabrina is so sweet and sheltered from the criminal world. They are complete opposites yet they are perfect for one another and balance the other out. The mystery surrounding her family history is also a nice touch. Does she believe Anton her enemy or her only family alive. I love the inner struggle she has with herself in what she should do and who to believe. Then when the ending came I thought it was well played out and very enjoyable. I was in a constant state of suspense and excitement of what would happen next. Hoping Anton's brother get stories as well.

I love Nicole Snow!!

A modern day Romeo and Juliet story. An amazing tale of betrayal by family and the one you trusted most.
Anton wanted revenge and out of prison.
Sabrina wanted revenge and answers.
But what they found was something so much more, they found d passion and an automatic spark that nothing could come between them.
But Sabrina was torn between blood and betrayal. Her uncle was there for her when she needed her and could Anton be poisioning her mind against her blood?
Willing to find the he truth, she risk everything and goes to her uncle and learns that maybe Anton may have lied as well.
Now she is more torn than even and now her uncle has her planning to kill Anton and his brothers.
This story is so truly wonderful and you will want to read it in one sitting.

WOW Recklessly HIS is Awesome

I was given a copy of this book for my honest review. Recklessly His is the love story of Sabrina and Anton, their families are sworn enemies and Anton uses Sabrina to pull off a well planned escape. However, from the beginning when these two first meet there is this gravitational pull towards each other and you just know they are going to collide but in a seriously sexy way. I am a SERIOUS fan of Ms. Nicole Snow's books, and usually its an MC Romance, but this book is no where near an MC romance but more of a MOB romance and it truly sizzles, from page ONE I could not put this book down. Ms. Snow keeps you engaged and anxious to turn the page and see how it is going to all work out. Sabrina did not want to fall for him, she did not want to believe anything he said, but in the END she had already fallen for him. LOVE at first sight can take place sometimes without us even realizing it and that is what I really liked about this book, how in spite of everything going on and all these terrible truths being revealed, these two were able to still love each other and be together. Ms.Snow is awesome and she delivers once again. This is steamy and suspenseful all at once. If you have not read any of her books, please START NOW. Recklessly His is a great place to start I know you won't be disappointed. FIVE STARS!!!!!! well worth it.

Much detailed technology, familiar in one sector, progressed only slowly over the boundary into another sector. This compartmentalisation was a feature both of the user industries themselves, and also of the supplier, or manufacturing industries. These barriers are now breaking down, with valuable cross-fertilisation taking place.

One of the industrial sectors that is waking up to the challenges of compact heat exchangers is that broadly defined as the process sector. If there is a bias in the book, it is towards this sector. Here, in many cases, the technical challenges are severe, since high pressures and temperatures are often involved, and working fluids can be corrosive, reactive or toxic. The opportunities, however, are correspondingly high, since compacts can offer a combination of lower capital or installed cost, lower temperature differences (and hence running costs), and lower inventory. In some cases they give the opportunity for a radical re-think of the process design, by the introduction of process intensification (PI) concepts such as combining process elements in one unit. An example of this is reaction and heat exchange, which offers, among other advantages, significantly lower by-product production.

To stimulate future research, the author includes coverage of hitherto neglected approaches, such as that of the Second Law (of Thermodynamics), pioneered by Bejan and co- workers. The justification for this is that there is increasing interest in life-cycle and sustainable approaches to industrial activity as a whole, often involving exergy (Second Law) analysis. Heat exchangers, being fundamental components of energy and process systems, are both savers and spenders of exergy, according to interpretation.

This technology module contains a brief introductory description to the exchanger type above, followed by information on construction, construction materials, operating limits
and principal applications. Where appropriate, a comparison is made with conventional
shell and tube heat exchangers to emphasise size and weight reductions that can be
achieved by using compact heat exchangers.
The Module 3 series present further information applicable to all technologies, such as
general advantages and limitations of compact exchanger designs, common applications,
fouling and how to minimise it, energy efficiency. heat transfer enhancement, exchanger
selection, specification and operation, process intensification and software programmes.

About the Author
Ben Groundwater is an Australian travel writer, blogger, journalist and anything else someone will pay him to be.  A professional writer for 10 years, Ben began his career in Brisbane before deciding to see the world, taking off to write freelance travel features for newspapers like the Sydney Morning Herald and the Courier-Mail, as well as various travel magazines.  He now lives in Sydney, and writes Fairfax Media’s hugely popular travel blog The Backpacker, upon which this, his first book, is based.

funny, a real page-turner

Well, first of all, the author`s name is Ben, not Sydney. Ben writes a travel blog in Sydney, Australia, and decides to go on a world tour to meet (and sleep in the couch of) some of his readers. The book is pretty much what happens in this world tour. Ben visits 14 countries, staying with people he`s never seen before (and sometimes has nothing in common with), and writes about the experience. Some of the chapters were a bit disappointing to me (London, New York, Toronto... nothing seems to happen there!), but overall I had a lot of fun reading this book.

Not particularly interesting

The idea behind this book sounds good but, being an Australian blogger, most of the offers the author got for 'local guides' were from Australian expats in various locations. Many of them appear not to have known much at all about their adopted homes and the author spends a large amount of his time getting drunk with them rather than discovering anything interesting. He also complains about some of his hosts more than you would expect, given they are taking him into their homes. I didn't find the stories particularly entertaining or insightful and the author came across as quite immature. Disappointing.

I Really enjoyed the book! The concept of the book was very cool and was a ton of fun to read :) I highly recommend!
