Advanced book for popular piano enthusiasts

Keyboardists can use this book as well. The first part details basics (chords, scales, etc) real quickly (I guess experienced users wont need the basics in detail) The second part goes through genres specifically. (pop ballad, rock, r&b, gospel, country etc)
Parts are split up among accompanying and melody leading. A beginner with no background will have no idea how to use this book. It is not a manual, more of a reference book for popular piano styles. Not for beginners, for the experienced. There isn't too much text explaining things. More of it showing and the reader to understand, digest and improvise. So you need some prehand understanding.
Excellent book no doubt.
I do have complaints though. First the binding is terrible. My book's pages started falling apart very quickly. I needed to go to a publisher friend of mine who took it apart and rebinded it for me. I may have had to lose the pretty cover but now it is sturdy. Second the paper is made of somewhat heavy stock making the book itself very large and weighty. I'm sure this contributed to the book falling apart.

This book has more than meets the eye

This could be a very good technique book as well for people who want to learn popular piano if it is read and used carefully.
He has an abundance of technical exercises in rhythm patterns, which is something that cannot be gained from Hanon, the king of technical exercise books.
Many teachers are not very good at teaching popular piano, instead preferring to reinterpret it as classical music (which is not appropriate given its different rhythm patters and key signatures--often less complicated than those in classical). This was written by a man who teaches popular piano and has a very clear idea of the rhythm patterns that make that unique. For example: He makes extensive use of the tie line and syncopation in his examples of R&B, which is what one finds in real music of this genre. But it is very hard to get that type of practice if learning classical songs.
As it has been noted before, the binding for this book sucks. But there are ways to get around that.
Also: This seems to encompass almost everything in other basic theory books that I have read/ own. It has actually obviated my other theory/ rhythm books. It will be a good saving of money to invest in this before any others.
Finally: The book CAN be used by beginners (in tandem with learning some scales) if it is used as he recommends. He says in the opening pages that it was written/ designed to be used by people at myriad levels.

Just The Book I've Been Looking For...

I have been playing the piano for over 13 years, mostly classical, more recently jazz and pop, but I've never been very pleased with my contemporary piano skills. Most books that teach the techniques of contemporary styles assume the reader has little or no playing background and don't progress very far beyond the basics, clearly not much help for the serious player.

However, The Pop Piano Book is precisely the book I've been looking for!! This book is perfect for the intermediate or advanced player who aspires to be a master of contemporary styles. With this book you can learn how to interpret a song in numerous modern styles, and learn the subtleties that will demonstrate your total understanding and mastery of each style.

The Jazz Piano Book by Mark Levine is my jazz bible, and Mark Harrison's Pop Piano Book has taken a place right beside it as my contemporary piano guide. It is phenomenal!

About the Author
Joseph L. Breeden is president and chief operating officer of Strategic Analytics Inc. Joseph has spent the past 12 years designing and deploying risk management systems for retail loan portfolios. At Strategic Analytics, which he co-founded in 1999, he leads the design of advanced analytics and takes a leading role working with client institutions. He has personally experienced and created models through the 1995 Mexican peso crisis, the 1997 Asian economic crisis, the 2001 global recession, the 2003 Hong Kong SARS recession, and the 2007 US mortgage debacle. These crises have provided him with a rare perspective on crisis management and the analytics needs of executives for strategic decision-making. Joseph received separate BS degrees in mathematics and physics in 1987 from Indiana University. He earned a PhD in physics in 1991 from the University of Illinois. His thesis work involved real-world applications of chaos theory and genetic algorithms. In the mid-90s, he was a member of the Santa Fe Institute. Since 1987, he has published more than 40 articles in various journals on subjects including portfolio forecasting, economic capital, evolutionary computation, non-linear modeling, astrophysics and nuclear physics.

Could save you a million times the cost of the book

Using documented case-studies and real world examples with numerous illustrations, Dr. Breeden bridges the gap between those with responsibility for creating complex credit risk models and management's need to understand on an intuitive level how to evaluate and manage risk. This book explores in detail the methodologies that contributed to the crisis and models that worked. Having had the privilege of hearing Dr. Breeden speak on this topic, I appreciate the opportunity to have his wealth of knowledge at my fingertips. This is a book that both managers and analysts should turn to again and again.

Too much words but almost nothing to be applicable in practice. I wished to find in this books something likes algorithm of application of dual-time-dynamic approach.
But by now I've just read a half of this book and I strongly hope to find more useful info in the last half.

Classic book, one of the marvels of the Mexican (MesoAmerican) contribution to World Civilization and mankind. The Florentine Codex was a series of works on Mexico, its people and their history overseen by Fray Bernardino Sahagun a Franciscan sympathetic to Mexicans and Mexican civilization, if not to their religion. It was written in the 16th century within living memory of the pre-Columbian Mexican Civilization. This printing is hardcover and suitable for libraries and serious students of Mexico. This volume is on the people of Mexico. Fray Sahagun is considered by many to to be the first anthropologist. Fray Sahagun's work is without parallel and this is the only hardcover edition of his work still in print. The English translation is clear and easily understood.

About the Author
Timothy C. Tennent is president of Asbury Theological Seminary. He was the professor of world missions and director of missions programs at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He recieved his M.Div in 1984 from Gordon-Conwell, a Th.M. in Islamics from Princeton Theological Seminary, and did graduate work in linguistics (TESL) at the University of Georgia. He completed his Ph.D. in non-Western Christianity with a focus on Hinduism and Indian Christianity in 1998 at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.

Brilliantly written

I am half way through this book. The book is self-described as a textbook on Missiology. I find this book to be extremely engaging. Tennent starts out with an overview of Christian world mission megatrends. He succinctly describes how the old missional framework of Christendom has been replaced by many sending centers.

I am now reading on the chapter on the 'New Creation' theology of culture. I cannot agree more with his view. I find it extremely helpful in thinking about how Christian missionaries can engage different cultures in an increasingly multicultural world by using the 'New Creation' framework.

I highly recommend this book for any serious Christians who are interested in missions, whether in your own backyard or across the ocean.

Christian Mission in the 21st century

This is an evangelical book on global christian mission in the 21st century written from a western perspective. It begins with an observation of the major trends in the global mission field today, namely the shift of the Christian center of gravity from the West to the majority world, the influx of multiple religious truth claims in the West today, urbanization and technology (esp internet connectivity) and the emergence of the 'fourth branch' of Christianity - the independent churches.

The author seeks to ground missiology in the mission of the triune God (what the early Christians called the 'missio dei') : the Father is the source and goal of mission, the Son is the embodiment of God's redemptive presence and the Spirit is God's empowering presence that brings forth the new creation. This is quite basic but often neglected when pragmatism and secularism sets in.

He gives an overview of the mission of God through the whole bible beginning with the call of Abraham, moving through the salvation history of Israel through to the life, death and resurrection of Christ and Pentecost. It is in the light of this 'creation, fall, redemption, new creation' grand narrative that we should understand what mission is about. Ultimately mission has as its goal the worship of God. Mission will end when eschatology is consummated and God's glory fully revealed.

Tennent also surveys the history and development of christian mission understanding through the centuries. It is interesting to see how the church has not always understood or valued christian mission in the same way. The various approaches taken by past missionary exemplars such as St Thomas in India, the Nestorians in China, Raymond Lull among the Muslims, William Carey the father of modern missions and so on are intriguing and eye opening.

The book goes on to show what a trinitarian mission looks like in today's pluralistic world. The age of Christendom is past. The familiar Christian worldview that used to inform and shape western culture can no longer be presumed. We must learn to think using different paradigms and ask new questions that relate to the various cultures the gospel seeks to penetrate : cultures shaped by Hinduism, Buddhism, Daoism, Islam and even Atheism. He discusses the various approaches taken towards other religious truth claims - from 'all roads lead to heaven' pluralism through the 'different roads for different destinations' relativism, , the 'universal work of the Spirit in the wider world' inclusivism to the 'no other name but Christ' exclusivism. Tennent espouses the trinitarian christocentric understanding of the gospel. This means that while we can readily affirm God's work in the wider world and much truths can be found in other religions, the gospel that's is centred on Jesus of Nazareth in all its particularities remains normative for the salvation of the world.

As an Asian reader, I resonate deeply with the author's call to relate the gospel to the wider world. The incarnation principle is never more needed in global missiology today. The gospel needs to be translated into the diverse languages, cultures and stories of the world.

Except for his discussion on Niebuhr's ' Christ and culture' paradigms which went just over my head (hence my reservations with his critique of Niebuhr), the book is generally easy to read and to the point. I would recommend this book to pastors, church leaders and all who are deeply interested in knowing what mission in the 21st century looks like. I also found his earlier book 'the religious round table' to be another useful tool for sharing the gospel of Christ in a pluralistic world.

World Missions

Timothy Tennent, President of Asbury Seminary and former professor of world missions at Gordon-Conwell has written a monumental and masterful work entitled Invitation to World Missions that is aimed at the concerns of 21st century missionaries, students, and teachers. The result of this book is a vast amount of ground covered: from building a theological basis for missiology, to Trinitarian thinking on missions, to an evangelical theology of religions, and then onto a history of missions. What was very alarming to me in reading this great book is that every time I would be thinking of a mission situation or problem in a chapter, Tennent answered my question before I was able to formulate it. This work gives much attention to the theological trajectory of the Bible and how God is ever at work from the beginning to end in missions. I hope to offer a few highlights of the book followed with a criticism and a conclusion here in my review.

Highlights

Capturing the narrative flow of the Bible
Tennet does an amazing job at focusing in on the narrative flow of the Bible and incorporating this into the role of mission thinking. As God reveals himself in the Old Testament, he does so by calling Abraham to be the father of many nations and accomplishing his covenant promises even thru perilous situations. God providentially enacts his missional plan and carries it forth powerfully. Tennent writes, "Because God already has ordained the final goal, He actually confirms it with an oath, swearing by His own self that all nations will be blessed through the seed of Abraham (Genesis 22:16-18)" (110). As Tennent sees God as both the source and initiator of mission, he also sees the providential hand of God upon all the affairs that take place with Abraham. One caveat here is that I wish Tennent would have drawn us to Genesis 15 as well, because this text brings to the forefront God's tenacious commitment to himself to keep his covenant promise to his people. Nevertheless, Tennent carefully weaves the reader through the Abrahamic narrative by squaring in on God's plan for all nations, regardless of their position. The way that Tennent brings out the essential elements of Abraham's life and connects them with the New Testament and life today is a great encouragement to those working alongside various people groups. In other words, God is committed to the point of laying his own Son's life down for the purpose of his glory going out among all nations, not just a select few.

Robust Theology of Culture
After critiquing the Christ and Culture models put down by H. Richard Neihbur, Tennent delivers some helpful paragraphs for understanding The Son's embodiment in Human Culture. He writes, "First, the life of Jesus as concretely revealed in real history is God the Father's validation of the sanctity of human culture. This should not be viewed as a kind of tangential application of the Incarnation but as central to our understanding of what Chalcedon meant by affirming the identity of Jesus as fully God and fully man" (179-180). We often get the billboard `The Sanctity of Human Life' but we rarely think about the Incarnation as providing the basis for God's validation of human culture. Jesus lived among his Jewish culture with all the things that go along with it: language, food, weddings, physical exertion, emotions. In Jesus, God reveals true humanity. Furthermore, I think this is part of Tennent's point, is that Jesus by his entering into human form affirmed those cultural artifacts that we encounter on a daily basis including a range of human emotion, meals, and cultural identity markers.

Yet, Tennent also recognizes that just as the sending of Jesus of Nazareth into the world was a sign of the sanctity of human culture, it is also a basis for cultural critique (181). The maladies of the plight of the poor and disenfranchised, the horrific wars and terrorist actions, lead us to see that culture easily drowns into death when followed by secular rule. Tennent writes, "The true union of God and man in one person is the ultimate rebuke against the secularization of culture" (181). The takeaway from this is that if we too easily demonize the culture for something or blindly accept some idea or artifact then we are not following the way of understanding culture given to us by the life of Jesus.

Lastly, I found Tennent's analysis in chapter 7 on a evangelical theology of religions to be insightful because it flees from the standard models of exclusivism, inclusivism, and universalism to see the positive and negative in each view. Tennent is right to see that often we want to lay down the lines of belief for battle instead of understanding the heart of another person's desire to be faithful for Christ.

Critique
My critique of Tennent's book primarily focuses on ch. 6 in which he talks about a new creation model. Tennent writes, "..we must place the emphasis on cultural adaption and assimilation, which is so heavily emphasized in missions training, with a larger context" (187). The larger context is our identity in Christ and being ambassadors of the New Creation. Tennent goes onto explain that being ambassadors of the New Creation is countercultural and nourishes the best in culture. Part of his answer to understanding the New Creation is looking at communities and their goals. Yet, Tennent seems to brushstroke in a broad way these issues of being in the world and not of the world, while not giving the reader a more particular outlet for understanding these missiological issues. For instance, what does cultural adaptation and assimilation look in a culture that degrades the environmental surrounding in there are for personal gain? Or, how does bringing the particularities of culture under the Lordship of Christ take place when there is such an intertwining of cultural positives and negatives? In other words, I think this chapter was good but that it lacked some real grounded applications of these principles (whether from government, environment, etc.).

Conclusion
This book is a goldmine of solid thinking on missions. You surely do not want to miss reading this book. Tennent is an astute observer of missional thinking, one who has been an active participant in mission and practitioner in the field. This book provides a sound theological and practical basis for understanding mission today without skating away from the issues on the forefront of mission thinking.

Fuchsia Dunlop has appeared on NPR’s “All Things Considered,” “Science Friday,” and “America’s Test Kitchen Radio,” and is a regular contributor to publications including the Financial Times, Saveur, the Wall Street Journal, Lucky Peach, and The New Yorker. Even Better than Her First Chinese Cookery Book!

I enjoyed her first cookbook on Sichuan cookery, Land of Plenty, and I like this second book on Hunan cookery even more, with even more helpful beautiful photos. As far as portion sizes, she states "all recipes serve two people with one or two other dishes and rice, or four people, with 3 or 4 other dishes and rice".

The Sichuan and Hunan cuisines differ from each other as New Orleans Southern food differs from South Carolina Southern cuisine, and yet both of Dunlop's cuisines are clearly hotter and spicier "Chinese" to our tastes. Hunan folks are said to like food with chilies "fire-hot-hot" whereas Sichuan's dominant style is a mix of chili hot and the peculiar "mouth numbing", from the Sichuan "peppercorns".

The Hunan recipes in this Revolutionary Cookbook are straightforward, nearly all ingredients can be obtained from a local Chinese or Asian grocery store. The only one I can't find is "purple perilla", for which Asian basil is not quite a substitute. Not a problem.

The 120 recipe instructions are for preparing simple, straightforward "comfort food", and the food comes out tasting very good. It's lighter, and not gooey, like the cornstarch-laden Americanized Chinese food.

Delights include: Spicy steamed pork buns, BBQ'd lamb chops, Changde Clay-bowl chicken, yellow cooked salt cod in chili sauce, with most fish dishes steamed. Try Chairman Mao's red braised pork, or one of it's 7 supplied variations. I think Ms. Dunlop overdoes the Chairman Mao bit, putting his cheery face on many, many pages for no good reason; it contributes little to understanding of him, or of the Hunan cookery. I'd rather have had more beautiful photos of food and other aspects of Chinese culture and people, instead of so many of Mao's images.

Have you had the traditional Hunan dish- "General Tso's Chicken"? Guess again! FYI, She met the accepted creator of this NON-Hunan dish, with added sugar for US tastes, created in the 1970's in New York by Hunan chef Peng Chang-Kuei! And yes, most Hunanese have never tasted this bogus, yet popular dish that is known in the USA as the "quintessential Hunan dish"! To adjust for tastes, she has both a Hunan version, and a USA version of Gerneral Tso's to choose from.

From her first book being shown to a Chinese friend of mine from Chengdu,who cooked from it and proclaimed it "the real thing" I know that Ms. Dunlop's current book is gonna be just as accurate. No, I do not currently have an authentic Hunan friend to vouch for the recipes, and I do not mind, I like what spicy hot things I have cooked so far!

Just as an aside- Her photo is only somewhat kind to her, it is an oldie, and she looks better than that in person. She clearly "knows her stuff"; I recommend meeting/hearing her on her book tour.

Buy this, and buy the Sichuan book, Land of Plenty, and cook and taste authentic Chinese "comfort food" as it tastes in China... It's a lot better than the cornstarch-laden "Chinese" food served in most US restaurants.

Land Cruiser fans - don't miss this!

Wow! This is a really good book written by a guy who actually cares about Land Cruisers as much as I do, yet still has a sense of humor. The writing is informative and really well researched but amusing at the same time...it's not just a load of dry specifications; it includes stories and anecdotes as well as hard facts. Lots of large, quality color photos. Highly recommend this to Cruiser heads.

Long overdue and worth it

I have been involved with off-road driving for as long as I can remember and there was always a Landcruiser in there somewhere. Alexander Wohlfarth has written a masterpiece. My only "criticism" if I can call it that, is that I cant read this book slowly enough (!!!) by this I mean I want it to last but I am ejoying it so much its hard to put down.

AWESOME!

I bought this for my dads fathers day gift. He is a huge Toyota Land Cruiser guy, and is very knowledgable. Even for a guy that knows a lot about the history of land cruisers, he was shocked about the information and content in this book. And best of all, a land cruiser in his collection is in the book! The poster included is a must have for any land cruiser enthusiast.
