About the Author

Paul Bakker is a software architect for Luminis Technologies. His current focus is on building modular enterprise applications and the cloud. He believes that modularity and the cloud are the two main points we have to deal with to bring technology to a next level, and is working on making this possible for main stream software development. Today he is working on educational software focussed on personalised learning for high school students in the Netherlands. He is also responsible for pushing technology forward. Luminis strongly believes in open source and all the technology development they are doing happens in the open source community. Paul is an active contributor on projects such as Amdatu, Apache ACE, JBoss Forge and BndTools. He has a background as trainer on Java related technology and is a regular speaker on conferences.

Bert Ertman is a Fellow at Luminis in the Netherlands. Next to his customer assignments he is responsible for stimulating innovation, knowledge sharing, coaching, technology choices and presales activities.Besides his day job he is a Java User Group leader for NLJUG, the Dutch Java User Group. A frequent speaker on Enterprise Java and Software Architecture related topics at international conferences (e.g. J-Fall, Devoxx, JavaOne, Jfokus, etc) as well as an author and member of the editorial advisory board for Dutch software development magazine: Java Magazine. In 2008, Bert was honored by being awarded the coveted title of Java Champion by an international panel of Java leaders and luminaries.

Enhanced my OSGi Knowledge base

This book covers quite a few topics (BndTools, OSGi, Apache Ace, persistence and many others) and I really enjoyed working through it using BndTools. The author also offers good advice as to why a particular approach was used comparing it to others. If your wanting to learn OSGi or even round off your knowledge on the topic, this is an excellent resource and also very well written.

I found myself pleased to have learned something new and to have successfully worked through the book using Amazons read.amazon.com on my laptop (Mint Linux). The formatting of the book for Kindle was quite usable. I also find myself applying what I've learned to real projects that I'm working on.

The author also offers source code on GitHub and BitBucket. The last section of the book is an appendix to an extensive source code example that's worth getting and figuring out. I'm working through it now.

It's probably a good idea to have a modicum of Java experience and maybe to at least know a little about OSGi.

I don't really write reviews but I consider myself a Java/OSGi enthusiast and consume knowledge on the topic almost daily. I challenge myself to learn new and interesting things on the topic so I can be a good reference source myself; this book is a terrific resource for that.

Catchy title but poor content

Bought this book to see how to use osgi for building cloud ready, horizontally scalable, applications. Book focuses on tooling, negative sides of jee and provides solutions to simple problems. After reading this book I am still not sure how to write elastic osgi applications.

Looks like book focused on talking how osgi is great for modularity, compared to anything else, including java itself but not describing how to solve harder real-life problems already solved by jee - scaling horizontally, running in transactional and distributed environment etc.

Liked the 14th edition far more

The 15th edition is not as friendly, easy to read, or informative as the 14th edition. The previous edition had more complete information, friendlier and more "comfort food recipes, and the print did not fade into the photo backgrounds as this edition does. Some of the basics (Macaroni Salad, German Potato Salad, Lollipops,Divinity, etc.) were replaced by more global concoctions (Ginger-spiced Cucumbers, Beet and Apple Salad, Curried Wild Rice Salad, etc.). I will miss the 14th edition and am sad to have lost the small tidbits of information provided throughout each section.

Recently I upgraded from the 1950's copy to this--I was a little worried that it would be a "book of Cilantro" so to speak, with everything new and nothing that I've come to know as B&H Cookbook style. Not the case! The book contains a mix of my old standby recipes, along with a ton of new ones. I really like the side-by-side recipe suggestions--one recipe that uses the leftovers from a different recipe.

For those who cook often, there's a hearty smattering of scratch recipes. For those who cook rarely (or those who have a cupboard full of random things), there are also a lot of recipes that use pre-made or canned ingredients.

Overall, very happy with this book.

It would be fantastic, if...

It would be fantastic, if they would have left IN the good stuff and left OUT the over-processed ingredients. I have an early 90's version of this book my mother gave me, and it has lots of great recipes, PRESSURE canning instructions in detail, and very few "packaged" mentions aside from some noodles and canned goods like beans. Since these are modern times and home cooking is on the rise, I thought this version would be more updated, less condensed-soup casseroles and more back-to-basics cooking. Boy was I wrong! Every recipe I have tried so far, while good, had to be converted from "packaged this", "canned this", and "purchased that". Why do they have to tell you to used packaged, purchased stuff? Is "packaged spinach" necessary? It is far cheaper if you buy it in a bunch without the plastic wrapper! It seemed to be PUSHING processed plastic wrapped stuff on the reader, instead of encouraging wholesome natural food. I had hoped to find updated rules on pressure canning, as my old edition had charts and details that were current on the topic 20 years ago, but no... they barely even mention pressure canning is possible! It skims over canning fruits, and mostly focuses on canning pectin jellies. I like the recipe ideas, and the converted Falafel recipe was heavenly, but the emphasis on processed food has turned me off from buying an update when this wears out. BH&G, I am VERY disappointed. I wasn't expecting a "whole food" cookbook, but I was at least expecting much less processed stuff. After all, I bought a Cookbook, a book on how to cook, not a Throw-a-bunch-of-bags-and-cans-together-and-heat-it-up book!

Before you think this reviewer is an old fashioned cranky grandma, let me tell you about me. I am a 26 year old wife and mother of 1, who lives in a city, grows herbs and salad on her patio, and had a mother who taught me how to cook at a young age. She didn't believe in processed junk either. I never ate hamburger helper until I tried it as an adult. We are on a budget, but we eat organic whole foods all the time thanks to my savvy shopping habits. I buy lots of produce when it's in season and super cheap, then freeze and can it to eat later in the year. It tastes way better and fresher than those BPA lined tin-can veggies. I am not opposed to things like storebought whole grain noodles, but I just like homemade better so I make my own. I had hoped this cookbook would reflect the growing trend for healthsome food and wholesome cooking. I didn't expect to get whole grain whole food recipes, but this was sadly disappointing. For the budding cook, this is a bad book to learn from. It sets a poor example as is. If you are experienced, you can convert these recipes to something healthy and get some use of it.

Robin Hobb is the author of the Farseer Trilogy, the Liveship Traders Trilogy, the Tawny Man Trilogy, the Soldier Son Trilogy, and the Rain Wilds Chronicles. She has also written as Megan Lindholm. She is a native of Washington State.

Getting substance and depth, a clear step above the first volume!

Although I bought this second volume in the Fitz and the Fool trilogy quite a while ago, I only came to read it very recently. And enjoyed it unreservedly! While the novel builds upon the universe Hobb created in the liveship traders trilogy (forget the second trilogy!) and the Assassin and Fool trilogies, the story is compelling enough to bring out excitement and longing for further adventures of Fitz and the Fool. Many characters that were introduced in the earlier volume suddenly take on substance and meaning, while the main characters are no longer heroes of past eras, but also acquire further depth and subtlety. Even long-lasting ones like Chade. I cannot tell whether this new dimension of the plights affecting the Six Duchies and its ruler, King Verity, was conceived from the start or came later to the author, but it really fits seamlessly and increases by several orders of magnitude the epic feeling of the creation.

Although it is hard to rank this book against the very first ones, like Royal Assassin, I feel this is truly one of the best of Hobb’s books, with the right mixture of action, plotting, missed opportunities and ambiguous angles about the main characters. So many characters truly come to life in this volume that I bemoan the sluggish pace of the first one even more now. While one could see Fool’s Quest as the fourteenth book in the Realm of the Elderlings series, and hence hint at senseless exploitation of the same saga, there are just too many new threads and perspective there to maintain this posture. A wonderful book and a rarity of a middle book being so. I am clearly looking forward the third instalment!

Finally!

I admit I might be a bit (a lot) biased about this book. Farseer is one of my favorite fantasy series ever. I understand some people thinking this book a bit slow, in some way I agree. Still, I just love it. I think this was a step up from the first book in the Fitz and the fool series (Although I really liked the first as well). It is more going on, and we are starting to see the outline of the full story. I would not recommend this book if you have not red the previous installments. I guess it could work as a standalone series, but I think what made me love it so much is that I really feel like I know the characters from before. Hobbs writing and characters are really good, as always, and also she is writing loooooong books. So they will not end right away. Already preordered the next book!

Tears, love, and laughter

I am fighting to not give the plot away as I think how to express my admiration for this work of art. Several different series come together as all seem ready to find one stunning conclusion. The reader gets to see Reyn and Malta again and learn about their son and his ongoing challenges. We get to see the Fool, Lord Golden, Amber, and Beloved. And little Bee is facing challenges beyond what most mortals can bear. And ALL of this pales in comparison to what we learn about the Royal Assassin. I cried. I laughed. I enjoyed this particular read more than any other book I've ever read. I could only wish that I could someday touch the hearts of my readers as Robin Hobb has touched mine.

About the Author
Research and teaching interests involve financial and managerial accounting. He and Professor Ross L. Watts received American Institute of Certified Public Accountants Awards in 1979 and 1980 for their joint papers. He received the American Accounting Association award for Seminal Contribution to Accounting Literature in 2004. He was the 1978 winner of the Competitive Manuscript Award, sponsored by the American Accounting Association, for his paper, "The Costs and Benefits of Cost Allocation." His research, which has come to be called "positive theories of accounting," seeks to understand the costs and benefits of various accounting procedures. He and Watts co-authored a book, Positive Accounting Theory, published by Prentice-Hall in 1986.

Research and teaching interests in the economics of organizations, corporate governance and compensation policy, corporate finance, franchising and banking. From 1989 to 1991, he was chairman of the Finance Department and research director at he University of Utah's Garn Institute of Finance. Professor Brickley was chairman of he Committee on MBA Programs from 1994-1997.

I did not find this book useful for me as I have had no prior economics ...

My Economics professor assigned this book for his course. I did not find this book useful for me as I have had no prior economics education prior to this MBA course. The graphs and equations were less than helpful, the book read more like a novel than an instructional textbook to help me learn. I ended up purchasing additional economics books and watching YouTube videos to understand the concepts from this textbook.

Not best textbook

Book acted more like a novel book in my opinion. The text book was confusing and hard to follow. It did offer great examples and relate to current and popular companies which helps to retain and relate information. Overall didn't feel it as as effective as other textbooks I've read in the past

How to Be a Good Wife by Emma Chapman. Marta seems dazed and confused about her place now. She tries to take up time, and becomes very observant of other people. She emphasizes and repeats in her head what she was taught about being a good wife. Right and wrong. A woman's place. She should be taking her meds. Her son's visit home sparks a rush of adrenaline. She starts seeing and hearing things. We should never doubt our memory or our imagination. Other people may try to impact and interfere. This book is an excellent perspective from the fragile mind. When the mind plays tricks it leaves people vulnerable. Just when she thinks she has it all figured out, it's all wrong. I really enjoyed the twist in this book. Great catch for the reader. I give it four stars.

Roslund Hellstrom are two authors: Anders Roslund is one of Sweden's most distinguished journalists and worked for many years as head of news for the Swedish equivalents of CNN and the BBC. Borge Hellstrom is an ex-criminal who works to rehabilitate young offenders and drug addicts.

Disturbing on many levels.

This book isn't for the feint of heart, it was so graphic and disturbing that I almost stopped reading it. Then, I realized the author was trying to make an impact with all the sick and twisted details that were included. It starts out tragic and ends the same way, it's what you learn in between that make the book worth reading. The whole 344 pages seemed to scream one question: What would you do if the same situation happened to you?

Quite a Challenge

Being engaged in a book about pedophilia, torture, human savagery and prisons can be quite a challenge. These co-authors know only one way to get from point A to point B: straight and to the point. This thriller is absolute darkness, a masterful reflection on the concept of justice. It is not the run of the mill mystery and not for everyone.

This story is raw especially at first. But as difficult as it may be, this rawness is for us to reflect on the second part of the book. The true basis behind this novel noir is how we react to what we read and this is where we find the talents of these co-authors come to play and excel in doing. The prose is razor sharp and different views are dealt with and zoom alternately between the investigators, prison inmates and personal, crimes committed by Bernt Lund and the parents of the victims. It chronicles the activities in detail graphic and brutal language. Everything that happens stems from the murder of two little girls in a basement of a Swedish town, the arrest of the pervert who did it and his subsequent escape from prison. My synopsis may be too simple but the story is far from it.

The second part is absolutely brilliant which invites us to reflect on the possible sentences for sex offenders, the death penalty, on the paradox of Justice and the power of public opinion. The story also illustrates the potentially serious consequences of letting people take the law in their own hands. There are numerous characters to keep track of and the name can become confusing but everything really gels well if you stay with the flow.

Gruesome but a very interesting and captivating story that kept my full attention from start to finish.

An agglomeration of interesting themes that is all squandered potential

A thriller should start with thrills, and the horrible crime depicted at the beginning of this book certainly churns your stomach and sets you on the edge of your seat waiting for the plot to unfold.

And "The Beast" starts out okay, with excellent character sketches establishing each person's place in ordinary and underworld Swedish society. With each new chapter you anticipate how these various characters are ultimately going to come together.

The major spine of "The Beast" follows the interior meditations of Fredrik Steffanson as he raises his daughter alone, and has various interactions with the other characters, which include his ex-wife, his current girlfriend (only described as beautiful and half his age and his daughter's nursery school teacher), police officers, prisoners, their guards, no-nothing working class Swedes who can't differentiate between a sadistic murderous sexual pervert and a flasher, and a pointless and unresolved side plot about a married prison warden carrying on a homosexual affair with a guard (one suspects that the authors simply wanted to put a sympathetic gay character in somehow, but it all looks tacked-on).

The more interesting and brutal interior dialogue is from the sexual predator, which does approach art as the horror of reading it is absolutely nauseating and horrifying.

But halfway through the work, the thriller stops, the "chase" is resolved, and it all becomes a preachy middle-brow meditation on what is justice in the face of a horrible crime in a society with the absence of the death penalty. There is a side meditation on vigilante justice. But these themes are not worked out in any complex or challenging way and lack the intellectual depth of an editorial in a giveaway newssheet. The allusions to empty Swedish state churches and a single mention of two popular evangelical free churches and their true ideas and the thoughts of their adherents is left unexplored and a squandered opportunity to make this vapid work slightly more complex.

An agglomeration of interesting themes that is all squandered potential.
