Gaius of Rome

I absolutely enjoyed reading "In the Shadow of Tyranny". I must admit, I am an adamant reader of History, especially in the ancient times of Rome, and wondered about this book because I have read so many. But this book captured my interest and had a beautiful arc, whereby the conflict and trauma was positioned in a way that made you want to read more of the story. I love it when a author tells us of the young life of a very famous character, and how they are molded into what they become in adulthood. And so it is, in this book, Westcott captures young Gaius Antistius Vetus in his beginning years and travest us on forward as Gaius finds himself faced with choices on which the lives of his family and the fate of an Empire hang. He embarks on a campaign that will end in triumph and terror. All the characters are believable and the honesty with which the story develops is so real that you'll find yourself entwined alongside them. Congratulations to the author, Chris Westcott, for recreating this magnificent ageless story that helps us step into a time long past but not forgotten - with Gaius Antistius Vetus of Rome in the shadow of tyranny.

Hope for a sequel

A fast moving story, well written and for an E-book reasonably well edited. The period of the novel has been extensively covered by other authors. Despite that interest is maintained throughtout.The writer gave a hint that there could possibly be a sequel. I hope there is because surprisingly there is not a lot of stories about Trajan's Parthian campaign.

Anachronisms ruin a historical fiction

Chris Westcott wrote a good story on a background of Roman history. His usage of a couple of current word usages detracted from the story. e.g., he used the word 'upped' instead of increased. Romans may have changed Latin in that way, but we have no record of that. Also, the F-word took another star off the rating for me.

I believe this book was written as a text book for students studying banking, bankruptcy, deregulations, causes of uncontrolled risk.
This book in content cannot be compared with other books concerning the same issue.

Great book

By starting at the very beginning of the Lehman Brothers story, Williams has essentially written an ambitious American tale of hubris. Other readers may want to gloss over the early history of the firm, but I found this most interesting. I did get bogged down during some of the background material on the entire banking system and the detailed descriptions of how investment banks analyze risk, but these chapters were certainly written with authority and precision.

The last chapters give consise accounts of what happened at both Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers before listing all the various actors who should be held responsible for the financial crisis. It's an academic and fair-minded approach to the situation. Some prescriptions for reform are offered at the end, many of which are currently being debated in Congress.

Great book, especially when under a deadline

Short on time, while finishing up the end of the semester, I needed a book with concrete information on the financial crisis for a final term paper. After reading several Amazon reviews, I purchased Uncontrolled Risk and found it to be extremely helpful with its overall examination of the Lehman collapse. The book was intriguing enough to hold my interest and definitely informative enough to help me with the term paper.

I especially enjoyed the Epilogue, in which there are startling figures of money lost and an interesting ten-point plan for a better (safer) financial future. Would I read this book for fun over the weekend? Probably not. But the bottom line: the book served a purpose for me that exceeded my expectations.

the shortest you can go, possibly

(disclaimer): As in other occasions, Packt invited me to review this book for them.

I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised with the capabilities of vert.x, which I had heard mentioned but had not dabbled in it yet. Vert.x is an actor-like (heard of the actor model? akka, etc?) for single-threaded event-driven concurrent web applications, quite similar to node.js, but with the twist of being also a polyglot framework; you can work in javascript, jython, jruby, groovy etc (did I mention it is for the JVM?)

The book is probably the shortest you can get to deliver a meaningful payload. However, Simone, the author, manages to show some useful recipes starting from the very basics. It is basically a longish tutorial that highlights the principal value propositions of the framework, guiding the reader from the installation to several complete code examples ( one of which, at least in my pdf, had a mistake, but not one that could prevent you from following along).

So, all in all, not enough knowledge to jump into a serious production project, but enough to play with the framework and maybe test it in your company or free time (I saw they have a bigger book on the topic).

If you already have experience with node.js, then getting to speed on vert.x is piece of cake, but if you are not familiar yet with the ever growing reactive programming, event driven paradigm and so on, then this book will give you a taste and you surely will be hungry for more.

I enjoyed the book but I am removing one star because I honestly think the price is a bit steep for 50 pages.

Let down by mistakes in commands and code examples.

There are a too many mistakes, such as:

sudo echo "export PATH=\$PATH:/opt/vertx/bin/" >> /etc/profile

on page 10, which gives an error: "bash: /etc/profile: Permission denied" due to the redirection not being done as root (sudo only gives root permissions to the execution of the binary, not the redirection of streams).

There is then a second mistake here, as in step three it makes a link to "/opt/vert.x", but here it uses "/opt/vertx/bin" as the path (note the mising dot).

If you know your way around Linux, you will get past these sorts of issues - but it does feel like sloppy editing.

The next error (if you're doing the Javascript track) is on page 13.

httpServer.listen(8080, localhost); / 3 /

Here, line 1 needs to have quotes around "vertx" and line 3 needs quotes around "localhost" to make the code work.

At this point I gave up - code samples in a beginner's book need to be tested thoroughly.

I hope PACKT will fix these issues, as the general approach and tone of the book is good - it's just let down by a lack of testing.

Short and concise

This is a short book (54 pages). As the name suggests, you can read it in "an instant" and it gets you bootstrapped into the world of Vert.x.

I liked the style of the book: it is short and concise and after reading it, you have a good overview over Vert.x as an application platform and the programming model that comes along with Vert.x.

However I have to note that the Vert.x project has a very nice online documentation. In my opinion the book goes not beyond the information that is also available online.

The advantage of the book is, that it structures the information in an easily digestible way that you can read in chunks offline. However I would have hoped for more "in-depth" information or some "best practices" how to use Vert.x in real projects.

If you have never heard of Vert.x, I can fully recommend "Instant Vert.x". If you have already played with Vert.x the book is probably not for you.

About the Author
Colin Bateman worked as a journalist in Ireland before becoming a full-time writer. His first novel, Divorcing Jack, was published in 1995 and won the Betty Trask Prize. Colin later adapted the novel for a film starring David Thewlis and Rachel Griffiths. Colin is the author of many critically acclaimed novels, including several that he has adapted for the screen. Crime is no laughing matter

It looks like there is still plenty of life left in Bateman's Mystery Man series, so clearly the court injunction filed by the owner of the real No Alibis crime bookstore in Belfast must have failed - either that or he's got a good sense of humour. Which is good news for those who like dumb, stupid comedy writing that plays knowledgeably with the conventions of crime writing, while making fun of them at the same time. Respectfully of course, after all, crime is no laughing matter.

Here in Dr. Yes, our pathetic, snivelling, neurotic bookseller shows some signs of kindness and decency and even seems to develop a spine when he helps out an obscure but brilliant failed local crime author Augustine Wogan, and it's got nothing to do with the chance of getting signatures on those first editions of his out-of-print Barbed-Wire Love trilogy of books gathering dust in a cardboard box in the shop, nor the promise of being given the opportunity to print the unpublished sequels to his underrated masterwork.

With Augustine's wife missing after going under the knife of mysterious plastic surgeon Dr. Yeschenkov, The Case of the Pearl Necklace (don't ask) proves however to be a particularly dangerous one. Our bookseller isn't going to let a busty, beautiful femme fatal distract him from his duty, or let the fact that his temperamental girlfriend Alison is pregnant prevent him from confronting a dangerous hitman and serial killer who keeps his victims heads in a hatbox - or to be more precise, it's not going to prevent him from putting Alison forward to confront those dangerous situations.

Dr. Yes and the continuation of the Mystery Man series is living proof, or at least literary proof (if literary is not too strong a term for this kind of crime fiction), that you can never get too much sarcasm, bad taste humour and stale old jokes in that grand old Northern Ireland tradition of having a laugh at things when the going gets tough. (And you have to laugh really when you see what they have for politicians in Northern Ireland). Bateman is thoroughly steeped in that tradition and the humour here is brilliant and unforced, arising out of those familiar local character types. There's still more laughs to the page than the recommended EU limit, so make sure you read this before the politically correct mob ban it or No Alibis succeed in their court injunction.

Cosy mystery/sitcom

Colin Bateman can do better than this. I've read two of his Dan Starkey mysteries, Belfast Confidential and The Horse With My Name, and they work quite well as hard-edged mysteries with a side order of comedy. In Dr. Yes the emphasis is on the comedy, and there's very little edge, hard or otherwise. In fact, this novel could almost qualify as a cosy mystery, and that's not something a lad-lit writer like Bateman would want. The Starkey books are definitely lad-lit, with lots of boozing, casual violence, sexism, and a hero who's lippy and self-centred. Those can be good things.

Dr. Yes is the third of a series featuring Mystery Man, the owner of No Alibis, a mystery bookstore in Belfast. The never named owner of No Alibis (it's an actual Belfast bookstore) finds himself investigating the murder of Augustine Wogan, a forgotten mystery writer, who's wife has disappeared after going to a cosmetic surgery clinic run by a Dr. Yeschenkov. Aided by his girlfriend, Alison, and Jeff the shop assistant, Man solves the case. This is really sounding like a cosy now, isn't it?

The plot of Dr. Yes is pretty generic, with only minor twists and turns. As I said, this novel's all about the comedy, and to that end Bateman makes Man a grab bag of comic cliches: he's a hypochondriac, he speaks his mind at inopportune moments, he's a coward, and he never passes up a chance to needle someone. The problem is that Bateman can't maintain a high enough level of comic writing. Bits and pieces of the book are amusing, and it's clear Bateman's a good writer, but too often Dr. Yes begins to sound like a mediocre sitcom. This is particularly true of the bantering between Man and Alison, which consists mostly of unfunny insults and comebacks. Their dialogue isn't mediocre sitcom writing, it's bad sitcom writing; think Everybody Loves Raymond bad. The best thing I can say about Dr. Yes is that at least Mystery Man doesn't solve his mysteries with the help of a cat. There are some lines that simply can't be crossed, even by sitcom writers.

Criminally insane

Blame it on Ian Rankin whose generous endorsement of Bateman's comic crime capers persuaded me to give "Dr Yes" a go and I am glad I did. Bateman is a quirky genius whose twisted sense of humour and killer timing is completely addictive. Seriously OTT in parts it certainly is, but this book is also very cleverly put together with useful suggestions along the way for further reading by real crime writers. Bateman is probably best taken in modest doses and read in places where outbursts of riotous laughter won't get you evicted.

Of course, all the right people would frown on our heroine engaging in a trade. But, she needs the money. What to do? Go out in disguise as Mademe Dupree and, of course, complicate things by falling in love with the Viscount while living under outrageously awful circumstances.

I recommend this book highly as a fun bit of escapism sure to entertain!

major disappointment

I am giving this book 2 stars because I absolutely love Julia London's books. All of her books previous to this one have been keepers. This one won't be. I didn't like it--at all. First of all, it was boring. I started to read it, couldn't believe I didn't like it, put it down, picked it back up, and had to force myself to finish it. Not a good thing in a romance novel. I read Lisa Kleypas's newest and The Education of Mrs. Brimley both in one sitting. Couldn't put them down.

What I felt was lacking in this book were magnetic lead characters. Phoebe was just sort of bland and Will wasn't too likable. I really liked the previous 2 books in the Desperate Debutantes series. But, the idea of a lady masquerading as a servant, okay a seamstress, same thing, just didn't work. And, it went on right up to the end of the book. That means that the whole time they are playing around, the hero thinks she is a servant. That, to me, is not honorable and not the way a hero should behave.

Will's family was just positively horrendous. His sisters were awful and I couldn't stand them. I certainly have no wish to read any more of their exploits in future books. They were screeching shrews. And, his brother Joshua certainly doesn't have hero material written all over him. I found it hard to believe that this family could fall apart so quickly in Will's absence.

Anyway, for me, this book failed on several levels. I didn't like the premise of the heroine pretending to be a servant for so long into the story. I didn't like the fact that the hero seemed to be taking advantage of a servant while planning who he would marry. I didn't like the hero's family at all and, worst of all, the book was boring.

So, 2 stars for Julia London, because I know she can do better.

Great ending to The Desperate Debutantes trilog. Phoebe character was great and the Viscount of Summerland character wasn't too shabby either. Had a few tears in my eyes when Phoebe thought she had lost William. Enjoyed this book, as well as the other two, their on my book shelf to read again, another day. Thanks Julia for 3 great books.

Benito tiene la habilidad de escribir de todo los generos, doy fe de ello, por eso cuando termine de leer estos libros me quede maravillada con su escritura, es real, entendible, cuando lo leer se te erizan los bellos de la piel con solo leer sus escenas románticas..

Great explanation of the book of revelation

Dr Stefanovic has a wonderful way of explaining both Revelation and Daniel. He also has a wonderful series on 3ABN called Revelation of the coming king. Same explanation even clearer. My only worry is that he seems to refer to Ellen White a lot. She was not a prophet and her sayings and writings are not scripture. Though sometimes adventists seem to act like it. That aside it is a wonderful book and series.

Ernst Wildi is an independent writer and consultant to Hasselblad who has lectured all over the world on medium format photography. He has written several hundred articles on photography and filmmaking. His photographic work has won many international awards, and he is the recipient of the 1999 International Award from the American Society of Photographers.

The best Camera Manual

No one uses all the features of a camera. This book gives concise instruction and graphic detail of the complete line of Hasselblad cameras. This is required reading for those new to the Hasselblad and a good reminder the the old timers.

Very dissapointing!

I bought this based upon other reviews. I was grossly dissapointed. This book is a product of the 60s - 70s that's been added to as Hassleblad releases new lines. How can a $60 USD book on Hasselblad contain NO photographs of any Hasselblad equipment? It's all line drawings and the better part of them are relatively primative based on today's standards.

The book does cover most of the body lines and accessories. But I found the narrative to be brief and the accompanying illustrations to be difficult to see - especially for the older gear. The book covers some technique but I didn't buy this book to learn technique. If you've ever used a Magic Lantern camera guide you'll think you've bought an antique with this book. I immediately returned this book.

A great reference book for the Hasselblad system

I am an amateur photographer and a very new owner of a Hasselblad 501CM kit. This was my first purchase of a Hasselblad camera and a dream come true for me. I am now about to finish reading Hasselblad Manual, which I can highly recommend to any present and future Hasselblad users. I think Hasselblad is very easy to use, but it is a camera with a number of special features, which need explanations to beginners like myself in order to draw the camerafs full potentials. The book explains very clearly what a Hasselblad user should know about those special features and what components in the system are most relevant to his/her individual needs. It also contains a lot of practical advice on the day-to-day use of the camera. I presume it is a big decision to pay a Hasselblad price for a camera (it was for me), particularly as there are so many cheaper Japanese alternatives around. For me, it has proved to be the right decision, and reading Wildifs book enhances the joy to use this great camera. The currently available fifth edition has very up-to-date product information. Hasselblad Manual is the reference book I will continue going back to as my photographic skills hopefully grow.
