This book is a must read for any student of Pakistani history. Though the book was written over thirty years ago, but its conclusion are still valid. It starts from the war of 1857 and ends with the separation of East Pakistan. It narrates the internal dynamics between different classes of Muslims (ulema, politicians, civil servants, military etc.) as well as between Muslims and Hindus. You get a fairly good idea about how the civil servants and military acquired power in Pakistan, how after part of Subcontinent that became part of Pakistan lost most of the business in the 10 weeks between June 1947 and August 1947, this void was replaced by Gujrati businessmen from South Africa and Burma. Again, a must read.

Critics "have discussed Plath's life and work as if they were exactly the same thing," and have drawn bizarre conclusions by assuming "that Plath's writing can be used as a reliable source for diagnosing her mental condition.". It is obvious that this kind of immediate understanding of Confessional Poetry leads nowhere. As Tracy Brain puts it, in her essay about the dangers of reading Sylvia Plath's work as an unfiltered outpour of personal experience ("Dangerous Concessions: Sylvia Plath"): How can we ever hope to distinguish the extreme diction and address that is prompted by lived events from a vividly imagined drama that is the result of an expertly assumed style? The answer is: We cannot. Still, one should not altogether ignore the context of the Confessional movement when interpreting Sylvia Plath. But how can Confessional Poetry be dealt with, without getting caught in the traps and pitfalls of a biographic reading? This essay will first try to detect the underlying principles of the so-called 'Confessional Poetry' and position it within literary history. By revealing some of the influences and conventions of Confessional Poetry it aims to uncover the deceiving strategies of this type of poetry. Very Good reading

This author does well at detailing different encounters, be it alien, supernatural or just pure strange encounters. Some of these encounters were seen by top military and top science officials as well as the general public. I have to admit I did have trouble putting this book down I found it that interesting.

A fascinating subject to take you away from the everyday mundane realities. I do not necessarily believe in each story but it does make me pause and think about it.

Phantoms and Mosters is spine tingling!

Lon Strickler’s “Phantoms and Monsters: Strange Encounters” is vast an eerie collection of first and second-hand eyewitness accounts from many around the country, detailing sightings and interactions with everything from aliens, ghosts, skinwalkers, hairy bipeds, and the unexplainable. Many of the accounts will raise the hair on your head, some will leave you questioning and skeptical, but either way, Stricker had comprised a book that will have you thrilled and wide-eyed while turning the pages.

Many reported phenomena are validated through other eyewitness accounts reporting the same sightings or occurrences in both nearby and distant locations. Many report sightings of reptilian-type aliens, alien-abductions, and odd neighbors that suddenly vanished. One of the most notable accounts dealing with abductions comes from a man who received a strange phone call at his office, telling him that his parents had disappeared, but that they were okay. The man immediately left to search for his parents at their home, only to find that it was true, they were gone. The man received another phone call telling him that one day his parents would return. To this day, they remain missing.

Strickler has chosen to leave the written accounts that were sent to him (many by email) in an unedited format. It often leaves the reader unable to recognize if many of the typographical mistakes have been made by the claimant or the copy editor. Yet, it doesn’t impede upon the book’s spine-tingling grip and fascinating content. It also adds or detracts credibility from the individual accounts, though this may be the author’s intention. Strickler leaves us with the option of assessing each account for ourselves, and to arrive at our own conclusions.

The book is five-star for its captivating quality and well comprised information. I’m anxious to read the second installment, “Phantoms and Monsters: Cryptid Encounters.”

This is a fascinating read. Its basically written to the author in the witnesses own words,usually asking for answers or if he knows what it is. If even half of these stories are true,we share a world with ghosts,demons,humanoid animal creatures and
aliens. Regardless whether you believe them or not,this book gets your imagination flowing and thinking about the possibility of what if it is true. How these people must have felt quite helpless at the time not knowing what to do,who to tell or how to get help. This author has a website and people

Good basic book for PMs

I really enjoy Fergus O'Connell's down to earth way of thinking. I am a PM and have been in the construction business for about 20 years and still get a lot of help from this book. A colleague of mine has it on his desk as his bible or reminder of what he should be doing. Not as in depth as some of the blocks of granite you can buy but still good enough to help you along.

This could well be my first 5-Star rating. This is an very good book and mostly don't read/listen to book twice but with this I did.

This is a Project Management Intro book that clearly lets experienced Project Managers realize they got it all wrong with the basics.

The way it was written and read (audiobook) makes this a delight to read without any flooding or information and junk.

Gives tips and note-like key points you can actually note down and apply
The principles in this book can be applied in any project
You can start applying the principles right away.
You dont need any prior knowledge to quickly grasp the key Project Management skills

The narator made the book even more enjoyable and I always love to listen to it

I expected to hate the book and be lulled into a stupor

LIstened to the audiobook version of this and bought the physical edition to use as a reference. I expected to hate the book and be lulled into a stupor, yet I was very surprisingly pleased at the candor and humor with which O'Connell approaches the subject. I think anyone involved in projects (as a manager or participant or stakeholder) can benefit from a quick go-through of this book, and I will be using terms and vocabulary from the book in my management - particularly "suck it up"

Th Human Brain Versus the NHL

This is a book that should be stocked not only by every bookstore that puts hockey books on its shelves but by any sporting goods store that sells hockey equipment. I wish the author had plugged away at finding a major publisher because this book deserves one. It's both exceptionally well written and exceptionally timely.

The book quotes the great center for the Montreal Canadiens Jean Beliveau: "You can play this game perfectly and never intentionally hurt anybody." Therein lies the deterioration of hockey civility, irrespective of today's higher calibre of play. Today's NHL features all kinds of players whose raison d'etre is to hurt opposing players so badly that they'll not only be out of the game, they'll be out like a light and even out for the rest of the season. And sometimes it's a Sid Crosby or a Wayne Gretsky lying on the ce. That mentality was foreign to the old NHL. It did not glorify players whose only skills were fighting and brutal body checking. Now, as even former big bad Bruin turned hockey commentator Mike Milbury puts it, "There's six or seven players every shift now who don't care about the puck." In the 1960s, such a statement would be unintelligible. How could ANY hockey player not care about the puck? Sadly, it wouldn't surprise any fan today. Gowdey traces the evolution of this mentality and how an increasing incidence of concussions has accompanied it. He is not to be accused of wanting to convert the NHL to a gentler European style of play. He mostly just wants to reduce NHL barbarism to a bare minimum. The whole idea that the NHL should tolerate a much higher rate of brain injury than is inevitable is appalling. (Oh, sorry, it's just the brain. I thought we were talking about an important human organ.)

Gowdey makes clear that the problem is not illegal hits. The problem is mostly legal hits that should be illegal. Rule 48 was supposed to eliminate nasty head shots, but it can't work because it's couched in too many qualifiers. Skating lawyers, not referees, would be required to interpret and apply this rule effectively. Head shots should simply not be permitted--period, no qualifiers. And why not rehabilitate old rules that are seldom invoked anymore such as those penalizing charging or deliberate intent to injure?

The game is too fast and the players too big to avoid unacceptable rates of concussion under current rules. What is particularly horrible is that the vast majority of concussions happen without the drama of a player getting knocked out, which at least alerts everyone to the seriousness of what just took place. And the effects of minor concussions are cumulative. It's an insidious problem.

How can players with real hockey skills function at anywhere near their best when they know that they may very well be clobbered by the on-ice equivalent of a Brinks armored truck after they make a pass, even seconds later? So many bona fide hockey stars have had their seasons punctuated with injuries that were very much intended by goons or have had their careers thereby shortened. The excessive violence hurts and demeans the game as a spectacle. Apart from the pleasure of seeing an expansion team win the Stanley Cup mostly with sensational goaltending, who wants to revive the likes of Philadelphia's Broad Street bullies, as opposed to the likes of real hockey-playing teams such as the late 1970s Montreal Candiens?

Gowdey's arguments are more sophisticated and more charitable to Don Cherry types than what I've extracted above in broad strokes. And he embeds them within historical developments that many fans are probably not aware of. Most fans, unlike myself, continue to watch the game despite the barabarism. Count Gowdey amongst the optimists who continue to watch, partly in the hope of identifying what needs to be changed and then arguing passionately for such changes. Gowdey's passion for the game of hockey comes through loud and clear, and that's why even defenders of the status quo should listen up. Moreover: it's not a long book. It can easily be read over a weekend.

NHL....Wake Up!!!

The author takes a nostalgic look at hockey history and winds it through to the present. Along the way, he discusses the evolution of checking and why concussions have become so much more commonplace. The science of concussions is presented in an easy to understand way and the book doesn't get bogged down with medical jargon. The book is presented in such a way that the point is made, but not at the author's risk of coming across as a one who longs for the days of old. A super read for any hockey fan, athlete or parent.

a mixed bag at best...

I had a preaching professor in seminary who said if you get one good illustration out of an illustration book, you got your money's worth. Okay, so I got my money's worth out of this book, but not much more. It suffers from several problems. Let's review them.

Many of the illustrations are directly from Tony's life, and as such are pretty soggy and not really transferable. How many congregations want to hear a pastor repeatedly say, "A funny thing happened to Tony Evans awhile back..."

For instance, he tells a story about going to Tennessee for a speaking engagement. The flight was delayed, and when he landed, he had an hour drive ahead of him to get to his destination. He was worried the entire time about being late. The man who picked him up at the airport repeatedly told him not to worry, as the audience would wait. Sure enough, when he got to the engagement, late, no one had left, and the entire audience burst into applause. So-so story, and since it didn't happen to us, how do we drive it home? It just sort of lays there. And it has too many brothers on these pages.

Concerning the non-personal illustrations, many are available elsewhere. Worst of all, sometimes Evans says things that I just find offensive. On two separate occasions, he says that God is looking for "groupies." I understand his point: God wants people who worship him with the same fervor they do their favorite entertainer. Still, the language is just tasteless. The word has too much negative baggage. Groupies are usually mindless sycophants.

The positive side of this book is that it might give pastors an idea of how to look for illustrations in their own lives. I have often found that the personal illustrations I come up with are just as good as ones I find in books. So, all in all, this volume is worth a glance, if you can get it cheap. Don't expect too much, and you won't be disappointed. Oh, by the way, the numbers in the index refer to the numbers of the illustrations, not the page number. The illustrations have tiny superscript numberings at the end of each. Just thought you should know.

Just the right words for the right word

This man is truly anointed by God Almighty. I grow from his preaching/teaching.
There's one draw bback to the book, when you're in a hurry to get that one special illustration or thought.

The index is confusing. It's explained that the reference numbers are for the illustrations not the page numbers. But, the illustrations are not numbered.

Other than that, a wonderfully on-time piece of work by one of my favorite teachers/preachers.

Pastor Evans manages to put spiritual concepts into everyday language, which is very helpful in my work in children's ministry. It helps adults, too, especially if you are a "visual" person like me!
