A great resource for understanding lambda calculus

I found the first half of this book on lambda calculus to be really helpful. The explanations and problems (solutions provided) made it easy to follow. As the book progresses, the author slowly transforms lambda calculus notation into something resembling ML. At first I was less interested in the "introduction to functional programming" part than the "through lambda calculus" part, so I didn't get as much value from the later chapters initially. Later, when I was learning SML, the value of the latter chapters came through. However, even if your only goal is the same as mine was, to gain an understanding of lambda calculus, I still highly recommend this book. It's the best introduction I've found so far

Very easy to understand. Has the added bonus of solutions to all the questions. Unlike Hankins book you really can teach yourself Lambda Calculus with this. If you see a copy available grab it.

Hard to start, but hard to put down.

I've been trying to dive into functional programming, so I bought this book. The first chapter or so was a bit off in my opinion. The author should have covered why lambda calculus was invented and done a better job of giving a general overview. However, after looking up a few things online and getting a handle on it, this turned out to be a really amazing book. The author essentially teaches you how to build an entire programming language from first principles. It's quite a journey, actually. And in the process you actually understand how functional programming works. Knowing only beginner python I was able to follow along quite easily and if anything the author went into too much detail. So I found the pacing to be wonderful and because you understand everything that went on previously, the next part really isn't much of a leap. Many confusing functional programming peculiarities like partially applied functions, prefix notation, it's heavy use of recursion (and how it is applied) is a piece of cake. The book concludes with looking at two real programming languages, both of which are still extremely relevant today, and comparing it to the stuff we've been inventing with lambda calculus. The two example languages are Standard ML (which Haskell is largely derived from, for instance) and Common Lisp (which is the other major functional family of languages around today if you ignore prolog).

So even though this is an old book, there's not a whole lot about it that's dated. If anything, it's dated in a very good way: it doesn't use academic language or assume you know a lot of programming concepts (many of which hadn't even been invented, so maybe that's part of it) or anything like that. It's easy to follow along with and lambda calculus is actually kind of fun. It's such a trivially simple method of calculating, but with thought you can create some very high-level math and programming ideas and see how they play out.

By the way, no math knowledge is required to understand this book. Honestly, all you really need to know is the basic concept of addition and multiplication since the author will be implementing addition and multiplication functions. Other than that, there's no reason an absolute beginning to math or programming couldn't pick up this book. You might have to read the second chapter a second time after you get the hang of it.

I want to give it five stars, but it was hard getting going like I mentioned. However, you can easily overcome that by finding and introductory article online or something. Nothing's perfect, but I'm very glad I bought this book.

The presentation is less cluttered than that of DK's popular "Eyewitness" series, as most pages contain no more than six items. Visit the past in high style!

Wow! What a totally awesome book that is filled with information about historical artifacts from various cultures. This over-sized, coffee table book is designed for older children (and adults too) and the wonderful illustrations and factual material will open up some of the wonders of archeology. The entire family will love paging through this volume...it is like having a museum in your living room. This is an EXCEPTIONAL book and one every school library should have a copy of!

An Antiquities Museum in Book Form - Wonderful Illustrations and a Worldwide Focus ...

“Historium: Welcome to the Museum” is a museum of ancient artifacts in book form. “Curated” by Richard Wilkinson and Jo Nelson, this exquisitely illustrated volume presents an overview of the diversity and beauty of man’s creative efforts. Presented in six galleries, each one representing a specific continent, the text focuses on the artifacts of several countries or regions located in the featured continent.

Following the introduction or “Entrance” and a short article answering the question “What is Archaeology?” a two-page illustration shows a timeline on which artifacts have been chronologically superimposed. This section provides an overview of the content of “Historium” and leads into the more specific “Galleries” (chapters) of the text. Each of the Galleries consists of a brief discussion and a key to the illustrations shown on the facing page, designated as a plate. Individual discussions begin by showing the name of the artifact, the approximate date it was created, and then the brief but informative text.

The illustrations alone make “Historium” a volume that anyone who appreciates artwork will want to add to their personal library. Softly colored pictures have the appearance of hand-drawn pen and ink illustrations that were common in journals during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The drawings are detailed, having depth and dimension. Printed on heavy, ivory or aged ivory-colored pages, the entire volume seems to be a vintage book that one might discover in an attic or antique emporium.

The volume concludes with an subject index, an index of the museums and collections housing the artifacts, a brief overview of the Curators, and finally, image credits as some illustrations were based on photographs.

“Historium” is a beautiful volume that is suitable for display as a coffee table book – it measures approximately 14 7/8” X 10 7/8” – or as a book for anyone, regardless of age, fascinated by history and antiquities. In light of the destruction of many ancient treasures, this is a significant book. It may serve as an introduction to and a means of preserving the memory of those artifacts for future generations. Five stars!

The HISTORIUM is basically an archaeology book for older elementary - middle school students presented in the form of a "museum book." The book includes pictures and write ups on over 20 different cultures and more than 100 different artifacts. HISTORIUM is a very well developed book, both in presentation and content. However, it is not something every student will enjoy. It makes a great tool for homeschooling as well as a great gift for a student who has a sincere interest in archaeology or social studies.

Dear reader,This first book of the Pastor Maggie Series was a joy to write. It is based on a lovely church in Chelsea, Michigan, The First Congregational Church, which I served from 2004-2010. The characters are born of my imagination, but I suspect you will recognize them in every church!I hope you enjoy the ups and downs of church life, small town life, and the special relationships they forge. Having been a pastor for over twenty years, I have been inspired by the good, the bad, and the hilarious. If you haven't been to church in awhile, you might enjoy sitting in the pew of this book. You are very welcome here!

About the Author
The Reverend Dr. Barbara Edema has been a pastor for over twenty years. To Love and To Cherish is her first novel, and was inspired by her experiences of parish life in a small town. In addition to countless sermons and a weekly blog, pastorbarb3.blogspot.com, she is the author of three plays, all successfully performed and well received. She continues to write the Pastor Maggie Series and is eager to share them with her readers. Barbara lives in DeWitt, Michigan with her husband, Dr. Douglas Edema, and an assortment of cats.

Inspiring read!

What a great read! I finished it within 24 hours and immediately checked to see if Book 2 was available. The book was reminiscent of The Mitford Series but with a young pastor. I highly recommend this inspiring read.

A wonderful love story in many ways

Thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. I was pulled into the life of Maggie immediately. The author paints a wonderful description of each of the characters and you can picture each one in their roll at the church and in Maggie's life. I laughed, I cried, but most of all I found myself admiring Maggie's heart as she lovingly and patiently ministered to this congregation through all its ups and downs. Maggie taught me that whoever God puts in my life I need to show them the love of Christ no matter how much they rub me the wrong way. Now I think I'll go and make a pie (read To Love and To Cherish and you'll know what I mean).

This is a MUST READ by both "believers" and casual readers! An insightful trip into the life of a female pastor named Maggie & her introduction to her first pulpit acceptance in a small church in a small town in Michigan. The author has the unique ability to describe each character in a way that allowed me to see a little of myself in each one. It allows us to realize life has its joys, triumphs and disappointments no matter who we are. About the Author
Dr. Bret Wagner is associate professor and director of Western Michigan University's Integrated Supply Matrix Management program. Dr. Wagner received his Ph.D. in Operations Management from Michigan State University and has published a number of articles on topics in production planning and scheduling. He has been involved in the integration of ERP software into business curriculum since 1998.

Ellen F. Monk has been teaching Information Systems at the Lerner College of Business and Economics at the University of Delaware since 1989. Prior to her teaching career, Dr. Monk worked as a chemical engineer for Engelhard Industries and W. R. Grace and Co.'s Davison Chemical Division. She has a B.S. degree in chemical engineering, an MBA, and a Ph.D. in MIS.

Kindle edition is just a big pdf

I'm not speaking on the quality of a book as a whole; I'm talking about the eBook version here.

The kindle edition of this book is just a gigantic PDF file. You're not permitted to read this on anything other than physical kindle devices or tablets. No Web reader, no phones.

Because it's not a true kindle book, every page is basically like reading an image. Trying to increase the font size essentially is like zooming in on a picture of text; it's not reformatted to fix the new font size. Reading this on a 7" tablet is extremely awkward and, frankly, painful. It might be more doable on a full sized iPad or 10" Android tablet. While there were warnings of what type of devices this was supported on, there was no message before purchase that said something like "this is just a garbage pdf file, are you sure you want to waste $75 on this?".

What crap.

Save yourself the trouble, get the physical book if you have to get this.

The complete work of ERP explanation

While they are hundred of SAP or BAAN or J.D. Edwards or Oracle books in the market, only few books were really written in "ERP context". Fortunately, this book is one of few.
The teaching experience told Brady and Monk that "teaching SAP application" to business students was not sufficient to make students understand the "concept of ERP". This is the impression for them to write this book. The foundation of ERP are addressed in business process perspectives; and then, mapped to the ERP process. One "BIG" case-study is used to describe the ERP component, with respect to SAP R/3 system. However, the fundamental is not limited to SAP package since extensions are also provided.
The uniqueness of this book is the combination of "O'Leary's book (ISBN 0521791529)" and "Jacobs & Whybark (ISBN 0072400897)". Like "Why ERP? by Jacobs and Whybark", Brady and Monk use a single case study to describe the ERP in "formal format" (not in novel as Why ERP). Like "O'Leary's book", this book gives the fundamental to understand ERP rather than "implementation of specific package".
Unlike "Why ERP", this book is the formal textbook, very easy to read textbook, not a novel. Unlike "O'Leary's book", this book is the explanation of ERP and interaction of business process, instead of implemenation and outline.
Another major advantage of this book is the easy-well-written is in 200 pages. Graduate students or passion-readers may finish it in one night. This book is also good for ERP introduction (1-3 meetings) for any Production/Operation Management classes or Supply Chain Management.
One thing that I'd like to see more is the "reference". While this book is quite comprehensive, the reference are limited to the CIO ([...] instead of many existed publications. I wish the authors would do more research in this area and put additional reference in the context in the next edition.

Invaluable source of MEMS information

As a MEMS professional I find this book an invaluable complement to the selection of MEMS textbooks - I wish this book had existed already when I started my career in the field. The book is well written, and the practical examples facilitate understanding of the subject. For me, especially the chapters on readout electronics have helped me become a better MEMS designer. I highly recommend investing in this book.

About the Author

Matt Smith

Matt Smith is a computing academic from Dublin, Ireland. In 1983 Matt started computer programming (on a ZX80) and for his 'O-level' computing certificate (aged 16) he submitted 2 games for his programming project work. In 1985 Matt wrote the lyrics, and was a member of the band that played (and sang, sorry about that by the way) the music on the B-side of the audio cassette carrying the computer game Confuzion (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confuzion). On a succession of scholarships he managed to spend almost 10 years as a full time student, gaining BA (Hons), then MSc then PhD degrees in computing and artificial intelligence. He then became a full-time lecturer. Having previously lectured full-time at Winchester University and London's Middlesex University, since 2002 he has been at the Institute of Technology Blanchardstown in Dublin (http://www.itb.ie/) where he is he is now senior lecturer in computing. Some of his previous Irish–French student team games can be found and played at http://www.saintgermes.com (thanks for continuing to host these Guillem!). Matt was one of the two technical experts for a recent multimedia European project for language and cultural student work mobility (http://www.vocalproject.eu). He studies and teaches Taekwon-Do with his two children, having been awarded his first degree black belt in 2015 (he also runs his club's website at http://www.maynoothtkd.com/). He is trying to learn Irish, so he will understand the report cards from his children's Irish-speaking school. In occasional moments of free time he also tries to get better at playing the piano and classical guitar. Chico Queiroz

Chico Queiroz is a digital media designer from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Chico started his career back in 2000, soon after graduating in Communications/Advertising (PUC-Rio), working with advergames and webgames using Flash and Director at LocZ Multimedia, where he contributed to the design and development of games for clients, such as Volkswagen and Parmalat, along with some independent titles. Chico has a master's degree in Digital Game Design (University for the Creative Arts, UK). His final project was exhibited at events and festivals such as London Serious Games Showcase and FILE. Chico has also published articles for academic conferences and websites such as http://www.gameology.org, http://www.gamasutra.com, and http://www.gamecareerguide.com. He curated and organized an exhibition held at SBGames 2009, which explored the connections between video games and art. SBGames is the annual symposium of the Special Commission of Games and Digital Entertainment of the Computing Brazilian Society. Chico currently works as a digital designer at the Tecgraf/PUC-Rio Institute for Technical-Scientific Software Development, where he, among other responsibilities, uses Unity to develop interactive presentations and concept prototypes for interactive visualization software. He also works as a lecturer at PUC-Rio, teaching undergraduate design students 3D modeling and technology/CG for games, in which Unity is used as the engine for the students' projects. Additionally, Chico is a PhD student in design at the same institution.

In concept it's a good book, but the execution is not good

In concept it's a good book, but the execution is not good, many places where the instructions just leave you hanging and confused as to what to do next and some of the example code does not work. Author assumes the reader can read his mind at times, refers to things that are not clear in the complicated Unity interface. Somewhat informative, but looks like the author either got bored or in a hurry. Thought this book would be more useful.

Just what I was looking for!

Can I just say I love you, Unity 5.x Cookbook? I've been using Unity 4.x for about a year now, I saw the release of Unity 5, and thought, "What? A new version to learn?" In walks Unity 5.x Cookbook in all your glorious insight and cookie cutter scenarios.

It is a great book. But remember, this is a cookbook, with recipes. However, even if you don't know anything about Unity, you'll learn a great deal by the end. Not only will you understand how to perform basic GUI and animation, but you'll also learn about some of the new features Unity 5 has to offer. It will be helpful to be able to read C# in order to get the full effect.

Starting in chapter 10 the author starts to really help you perform some advanced topics that most books gloss over or don't even cover. Things like communicating with a website and securing your game; as well as securing your source code. It's a thorough book and if you follow the steps like I did, you'll be able to modify that knowledge with your own ideas in no time at all. I love Unity and I now love this book because it will be a great reference for a long time.

Awesome CookBook!

This book was a steal at $5.00 on the Packt site, they have a deal going on right now. I felt this book was as suggested a cookbook, it had various method to do various functions. Chapter 10 - Working with External Resource Files and Devices was probably my favorite, it showed me a few new methods for loading data that I hadn't otherwise considered. You can't go wrong with this one folks.

Don't buy this definition paperback for the exorbitant price

This book is nothing more than a definition book. I would say it's worth is about $5 to $10. It is ridiculous to sell this book for over $50. Amazon should state what it is.... A very concise book of clinical terms defined. I am returning it for a refund.

Dr. Teresa Chahine is the Social Entrepreneurship Program Leader at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, Center for Health and the Global Environment. She teaches social entrepreneurship at Harvard Chan School and Harvard Extension School, and trains social entrepreneurs worldwide. Dr. Chahine is also the Director of Alfanar Lebanon, which she launched in 2012. Alfanar is a venture philanthropy organization supporting social entrepreneurs in Lebanon and Egypt since 2004. A Must Read

This is a monumental achievement for a first time writer and a Harvard-trained faculty member. An awesome introductory book, it is perfect for a course on Social Entrepreneurship. This is must book for learning the contemporary issues in this field of science, one that covers a wide range of issues and topics that have to be mastered before embarking on a journey into social entrepreneurship. Highly recommended.

This book is so impressive. As soon as you open the book and go through it, you notice the time, energy and effort that clearly went into it. The content is impressively well-organized with helpful sections and structure. I love the informative interviews with fascinating and diverse people that anyone can learn from and enjoy.
