Great recipes for your soupmaker

I bought a soup maker -these are recipes extend the use of my soup maker. I don't have to convert measurements to fit it. I have made about 4 different soups so far. Three were very yummy the fourth was ok. They are all pretty low in calories - great way to lose weight and feel full.

A Beautiful Deception

I give this book 3 stars to split the difference between the 1 star it deserves as a book, and the 5 it deserves as a marketing lesson.

Like most reviewers so far, I bought this book because I'm a fan of SG. However, while I do believe he is preaching his message with the sincere intention to serve us, his readers, I must disagree with the raving reviews. As I read the same message he's given us before, remixed with nuggets from his vast reading, I feel deja vu. The book is like a handful of fortune cookies from SG's all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet.

The Icarus Deception is grab-bag of his market insight and signature motivational style, already well-expressed on his blog and in his other books. The references to SG's broad reading (even Ulysses gets a nod) was probably thrown in to mix things up, but all it does for this reader is mix up things.

The cajoling to seize your destiny, and live as an artist of life, is not without charm. But SG can do better. He is better than this book. His readers certainly deserve better. Mr. Godin, your readers deserve all of that enormous brain of yours, not just the clever marketing gland (which I can only assume is just above the lizard brain).

A good book on life and work as an artist is the "The Elephant and the Flea" by Charles Handy.

Good examination of what it means to be an artist - could've been much shorter

Overall I’d recommend this book.

His basic message is to create things you feel compelled to create, because that's your best shot at success in this new economy.

With the advent of the Internet, distribution is now basically free. In the traditional economy, everything was tangible and thus scarce. Customers demanded these goods, so value was created when you could bring these goods to the customers. That created lots of gatekeepers who would decide how to allocate their scarce resources: retailers charge slot fees, publishing houses pick authors, etc.

However, now distribution is free: billions of people are (mostly) free to connect with any of the others billions of people. It’s an unprecedented and amazing time for us, given how important connections are to us.

But because distribution is free, there’s a lot more noise out there. Curation is still important. How do you cut through all the noise and add value to other people?

The answer is that you do things that are valuable and are worthy of cutting through the noise. And the author asserts you do that in two ways: making a commitment to art, and getting good at that art.

Art, as defined by the author, is work that is new, real, and important. It’s using your gifts to make a difference in other people’s lives.

It’s operating without a map, exploring the edge of what’s possible. And, it’s inherently risky. You might fail. You’ll probably fail. There have always been “safe paths”, but those necessarily required you to follow a plan that’s not yours. And people usually have to give up part of themselves to follow it.

Instead, now today, we live in a world where you can create your own path. You can find and serve your customers wherever they are. But you need to find your unique offering, because if you just copy someone else, then customers will just go to that someone else.

There are millions of bloggers out there, but certain bloggers stand out in part because of their unique voice. We connect with them, we like their style and personality. But I’m not going to connect with every great blogger because some will just rub me wrong. That’s OK, because someone I connect with will rub someone else the wrong way.

When you can’t please everyone, that’s OK in the new economy. In fact, that is a differentiator.

One action item from this book is to recognize situations where I’m feeling internal fear/stalling/insecurity when creating, recognizing procrastination and subtle instinct to seek approval. Another is to remember that shame is a choice – you can’t feel ashamed without your permission, only if you agree it’s bad.

The major critique I have for this book is it’s way too long. This thing could’ve been 25% the size and still gotten the major points across. It meanders this way and that way. I’m sure he could’ve made more concise without compromising himself.

I Love Seth (but this book is 1.5x too long)

The book in a nutshell:

1. We've been brainwashed by the industrial complex to fly too low, to comply, to surrender our brilliance for perceived security.
2. That strategy once worked--our comfort zone and that safety zone we were offered were aligned.
3. They are no longer aligned and most aren't noticing. That's dangerous. The world tilted on it's axis and folks aren't noticing.
4. The new gig is to produce "art" in whatever you do (no matter what you do), because art "connects" and people want connection.
5. Everybody can be an artist at whatever they choose to do. You don't need to change your work or career. Just elevate your work to art.
6. But to do that you have to step over fear and the lizard brain (amygdala) we have that screams "you are gonna die!" if we attempt to do something risky and creative.
7. But you gotta do that because the world is waiting on your art, your connection, your breath of fresh air.

The bulk of the book is looking at the nuances of all this in about 88 different ways when you'd really probably get it after four. He's got a great theme and call to action, and there are some gems in here to be sure. But there are times when I was simply thinking to myself, "Really, Seth? I trusted you, and you are driving me around all the blocks in the neighborhood when just a couple would have conveyed the sense of the place."

But heck. Maybe I didn't get the "art" of this type of book. But don't get me wrong. I'll buy the next Seth book because Seth rocks and all. But, my goodness, this was the longest short read I've ever read, and I even just skimmed all the Kickstarter Acknowledgements that are a whopping 20% of the total length of the book. Would I recommend the book? I am glad for the gems I pulled out of it. But, honestly, after seeing the pattern, I was ready for the book to be over with. So the answer is, "It depends." If what you are looking for is a kick in the pants to get on with your "art," I'd recommend Pressfield's "The War of Art" instead. If you are not sure you are an artist or can be an artist at whatever you do, and want to entertain that idea, then this book might be for you.

There is a true love and fierce loyalty present in the Casson world

I first encountered the Cassons when I was 12, immediately swept into their charming little corner of the world. Not all books we read at this age manage to stand the test of time, however, and they lose their spark when we have passed through that stage of our life. But the Casson children have been my companions, read and reread so many times that I have lost count, for ten years now. At age 22, I am just as charmed, if not more, by the way Hilary McKay writes unforgettable and carefully nuanced characters. While the books don't have harrowing plot twists, action sequences, or any kind of magical/supernatural element, McKay manages to bury you in a world that you are reluctant to leave. If you are a reader who appreciates characters and a strong narrative voice, I can guarantee that you will be swept into this world and immediately taken with the Cassons and all who cross their paths. If I have a family one day, I cannot wait to read these to my children. There's a timeless element about the Cassons - despite the stretching on for nearly a decade, there is hardly anything that dates them, and it is lovely to read about a family that isn't bogged down by the technology of today, but this doesn't change how relatable they are in the least. There is a true love and fierce loyalty present in the Casson world, one that makes this family so genuine and refreshing. There is something pure about the Casson books but without a watered down or juvenile feel them. I have, of course, read many fantastic books in my life, but I have never been so taken with a book the way that the Cassons have settled so permanently in my heart.

It also explores low copy number DNA typing, mixtures, and quality assurance and control.

The second section examines the collection and preservation of biological evidence under a variety of different circumstances and the identification of human remains―including in mass disaster settings. It discusses applications to bioterrorism investigations, animal DNA testing in criminal cases, pedigree questions and wildlife forensic problems, applications in forensic entomology, and forensic botany.

The third section explores recent developments and new technologies, including the rigorous identification of tissue of origin, mtDNA profiling using immobilized probe strips, chips and next-generation sequencing, the use of SNPs to ascertain phenotypic characteristics, and the "molecular autopsy" that looks at aspects of toxicogenetics and pharmacogenetics.

The book concludes with a discussion on law, ethics, and policy. It examines the use of DNA evidence in the criminal justice system in both the United States and Europe, ethical issues

in forensic laboratory practices, familial searches, DNA databases, ancestry searches, physical phenotyping, and report writing. The contributors also examine DNA applications in immigration and human trafficking cases and international perspectives on DNA databases.

About the Author

Dragan Primorac, M.D., Ph.D., is a pediatrician, forensic expert, and geneticist. Currently he serves as an adjunct professor at Eberly College of Science, The Pennsylvania State University, and The Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences, University of New Haven in the United States and at Medical Schools in Split and Osijek in Croatia. Professor Primorac is a pioneer in the application of DNA analysis for identification of bodies in mass graves. He authored close to 200 scientific papers, book chapters, and abstracts in areas of forensic science, clinical medicine, molecular genetics, population genetics, genetic legacy of homo sapiens, education, science, and technology policy.

Moses S. Schanfield, Ph.D., has undergraduate and master’s degrees in anthropology and a PhD degree in human genetics. He has been involved full time in forensic testing for 30 years. Professor Schanfield has been involved in the development of some of the critical functions of modern forensic DNA testing including the in-lane size ladder, which is used in all human identification testing. He has published extensively on forensic DNA testing and has testified in state, federal, and military courts in the United States and Canada, Puerto Rico, and Barbados.

Robert K. Merton (1910-2003) was University Professor Emeritus at Columbia University, the first George Sarton Professor of the History of Science at the University of Ghent (Belgium), and a leading figure in the sociology of science. Among his classic works in this area are On the Shoulders of Giants and Science, Technology, and Society in 17thCentury England.

Learn Quickly from a World-Renowned Expert

There’s no medical jargon here. Dr. Yapko gets right to the point. Actually, he gets right to 50 different points. That sounds like a big number, I know. But each point is presented as a chewable bite of two or three pages, organized in four groups within a manageable 130 pages. Here is how I summarize those four groups. 1. Let’s start by clearing up any confusion about what depression is and isn’t. (This will surprise you.) 2. Now let me tell you the essential skills on how to get stronger. (And some of those skills are simply changing your attitude.) 3. You’re not going to figure all this out up in your head; you’ve got to reach out and connect with others. (You’ve simply got to. Because he understands what the depressed person needs most, he created a format that provides clear and accessible direction to those most at risk of getting lost and discouraged by all of the confusing and overwhelming information about depression. Teens, adults, parents, teachers, therapists, doctors should all have this practical book nearby to read and to share.

Excellent Guidebook to the Way out of Depression (and much more!)

This is one of the few books that I know that is helpful even if you just read the titles of the chapters! In “Keys to Unlocking Depression,” Dr. Yapko provides a series of easy to read chapters that highlight skills and information that are essential to recover from and prevent depression. In one example, he discussed the importance pairing motivation and skill/information with the observation that “It doesn’t matter how motivated you are to watch the sunset. If you face east you’re not going to see it!” The nature of the suggestions throughout the book are so foundational that even if you don’t suffer from depression, you will benefit from knowing and then following the suggestions. His hopeful and inspiring message includes information about how to proactively modify your genes with actions and how to more efficiently apply your efforts to achieve results you really value in your life. Dr. Yapko combines practical wisdom, stories and anecdotes, and research in an easy to follow guidebook to resilience. A very useful book for anyone!

The History of Bulgarian Aviation is a story that begins with Bulgarians' initial efforts to fly at the turn of the 19th and 20th Centuries, when the first successful experiments with heavier-than-air flying machines took place. The apogee was in the Balkan War when the Bulgarians organised and waged the first aerial war in world history. Shortly after, Bulgarian aviation participated ably in the Second Balkan War and the Great War. Wartime collapse did not stop the Bulgarian thrust for the skies. Between the Wars, Bulgaria created indigenous aircraft design and manufacture and rapidly restored its air power. In the Second World War, the Vazdushni Voyski defended the homeland from Anglo-American air raids in 1943 and 1944 before offering air support to advancing Bulgarian land forces in late 1944. While the Paris peace treaty temporarily restricted development, after 1950 Bulgaria began a massive rearmament of its combat aviation. By 1955, the Bulgarian Voennovazdushni Sili were the Balkans' most powerful airforce: an advantage retained through the rest of the Cold War. The system's transformation to date winds up the story. The hardback volume illustrated by over 700 quality photographs and aircraft drawings, 32 diagrams and 13 tables remains the sole book covering more than 110 years of Bulgarian combat aviation.

More than we knew...

his authoritative and excellent work, written by a Colonel (and still active MiG-29/21 pilot) is from first glance an obviously well researched and quite comprehensive one. As the title implies it is a complete look at, if relatively unknown, history of Bulgarian military aviation development.

It is well illustrated in the Putnam books style with 789 black and white photographs, most of which were new to this reviewer, as well as maps, charts and illustrations all of which compliment the text.

The book not only examines aircraft and pilots that flew for Bulgaria, but those machines which were built and in some cases designed. It also provides the political and social events the formed the Bulgarian aviation arm. The time frame covered is from just prior to the Balkan War in 1912 through to 2010. The section on World War I is replete with its activities as part of the Central Powers, which very little has been previously detailed elsewhere. Of course the inter-war years and WWII are meticulous covered and for those who are interested in this period they will not be disappointed. It is the post-WWII transformation to a Soviet Russian system that is very well documented and provides great insight into the emergence of cold-war politics and activities of an Eastern-bloc nation. The story does not quite end here as the transition to a member of NATO and then European Union, an event inconceivable just a few years prior, rounds out the history.

Particulars of military aviation events in Bulgaria have been obscure for a variety of reasons not the least is the Bulgarian language and the lack of access to primary source material. However in the past 10 years the shift to member of NATO and then in 2007 of European Union material in archives and related information have become more accessible. The author of this book, Dimitar Nedialkov, who is also the head of Air Force Department in Bulgarian Military Academy as a professor Dr.Sc., is well know to the Bulgarian aviation researcher community has begun to bring his talented authorship to the English reading community.

In the case of this book, a comprehensive romp through Bulgarian air power, we are quite fortunate to have a well documented work available in English and written by a Bulgarian who had access to a great deal of primary source material and who thoroughly appreciated the subject matter at hand.
