A vert good devotional

Having "Walk Through the Word" on my iPad, I can listen to the passage as I read it. I plan to use it each year as a guide to reading the New Testament through. I also enjoy the devotional thought from one of 52 different pastors. I have almost completed one full year with this devotional and will use it in 2014. I highly recommend this to others.

Solid devotions. It's a good way to stay in the Word. I personally would like a different translation from the New King James, due to the ambiguity of the language, but otherwise excellent.

Tony Prince graduated with B.A. and PH.D. degrees in Chinese Studies from the University of Sydney, Australia. After spending five years in Taiwan and Japan, he returned to Australia to take up a post at the University of Sydney, where he taught Chinese language, literature and history until his retirement in 2000. He has been studying Huayen Buddhism for thirty years and was the first president of the Huayen Buddhist Community of Australia.

Not a Translation of the Avatamsaka Sutra - but a wonderful introduction to the teachings and practices of Huayen Buddhism

Note: This is not a translation of the Avatamsaka Sutra, as one of the 5-star reviewer wrote. However, it is exactly, what the subtitle of the book says: "An Introduction to the Teaching and Practices of Huayen Buddhism."

I came across Huayen Buddhism a decade or so ago from a reference in a book discussing A.N. Whitehead's "process theology." Being a lay Buddhist practitioner and having some remaining interest in Christianity, the possible connection intrigued me. The more I read, the more I had a sense of something being there that I wanted to know more about. Unfortunately, most of the available information on Huayen (in English) is quite academic, dense and not-aimed at the lay practitioner.

Ultimate Enlightenment is THE book that I would have loved to have had 10 years ago when I first wanted to know more about Huayen. It's clear, concise, non-academic, non-pedantic and is exactly the introduction that the subtitle says it is. There are a few selected writings from the Sutra, but primarily, this book is an explanation of the underlying beliefs and practices of the Huayen Buddhist school which still has adherents to date, though most historians consider that the school died out or was integrated into the Zen and Ch'an schools.

Prince has done us a favor in writing a clear introduction to the longest Buddhist sutra. Were anyone to ask me, "what should I read to learn more about Huayen?" I'd point them to this book first... even before the Sutra....

A Wonderful Translation of a Great Buddhist Sūtra!

This is a wonderful book! Universal Enlightenment is a beautiful translation of the most comprehensive Buddhist Sūtra, the Avataṁsaka Sūtra. It often draws parallels between the concepts presented in the Sūtra with those of well-known western philosophers which makes it relevant from many points of view. This book is a delightful read, both interesting and inspirational. It's a fascinating book for anyone interested in the history of eastern philosophy and a must-have book for those on the Eightfold Path.

Non-fiction at its best

Insightful, meticulously researched and beautifully written, The Steal explores shoplifting as a cultural phenomenon -- crime, disease, and protest -- that has always been with us and always will be. No one can stop shoplifting-- not the stores with their increasingly sophisticated anti-theft devices, not the police who arrest shoplifters, and not the psychologists who treat them because we shoplift for reasons that are too deeply embedded in our society to ever go away.The book benefits enormously from not only the author's tireless pursuit of every angle of her subject, but also her deep familiarity with the literature of shoplifting. Yet Mrs. Shteir wears her learning lightly. The Steal is as much fun to read as it is informative.

INTERESTING INSIGHT

As we know, there are professional shoplifters/criminals, and others that act on impulse or needing something beyond their financial means. This is a good one to read by law enforcement folks, and especially store/mall security types. The shoplifters cause us to pay for the losses by the stores, and of course, tie up the police and courts with minor crimes. Good insight. I liked it.

Bright and sparkling

Billing itself as the first genuine study of shoplifting, Rachel Shtier's charming cultural history THE STEAL examines the ways in which stealing merchandise has been around for centuries but has exploded particularly in the United States in the last fifty years. Shtier offers a wealth of enjoyable and intelligent anecdotes that stretch from ancient Greece to the present day involving theft. Did you know, for example, that one of the landmark early court cases of shoplifting in England in the early nineteenth century was committed by Jane Austen's aunt? (The prosecution could not explain adequately why a wealthy woman would stoop to petty thievery, and so she got off, in a pattern that would be replicated for decades in the next two centuries in cases involving "thrill shoplifters"). Shtier's prose is as fizzing and as enjoyable as her sensational topic merits: this is a book that does not position itself as a heavily scholarly study of shoplifting, but rather as an enjoyable cultural history of the crime marketed to a broadly popular audience. As such, the work does not freight itself with either footnotes or heavy sociological analysis, and attempts to cover all kinds of bases, from the history of the crime (which Shtier intriguingly argues mushroomed after the appearance of Abbie Hoffman's incendiary STEAL THIS BOOK in 1971) to its effects on merchandise sales today, and to the extraordinary efforts taken by merchants to create anti-theft devices and shaming techniques to combat theft. I found Shtier's prose, her subject matter, and her wealth of material great fun, and her research impressive; my only problems occurred with the book's sometimes confusing organization. (More specific chapter titles to announce her topics would certainly have helped.) But this is a rich and entertaining read overall.
