Follow Dr. Hunter's protocol to achieve remission

Dr. Hunter has the answer to Crohn's and American doctors should adopt his methods as best as they can in the U.S. health system. I wonder if he does not have more reviews here because it is a challenge to follow his protocol. When our daughter was diagnosed with Crohn's, we did not realize that the U.S. is NOT at the forefront of this disease. Our first GI doctor told us that no one knows the cause or the cure, but there is medicine. That doctor put her on prednisone, told us diet didn't matter and prescribed Immuran as the drug of choice. When she had a severe reaction to Immuran, we switched doctors. By this time, we were beginning to learn more and had heard of treating with elementary formula. Our new doctor endorsed this protocol. So we started her on formula and began a prednisone wean. Then, influenced by this book, we fed her broths and started an elimination diet to re-introduce foods. In the UK, Dr. Hunter has a nutritionist counsel each patient for several months during this period. We played it safe and stuck with a limited diet supplemented by continued formula (which provides both extra nutrients and calories). Our daughter now feels well, weighs in the 75th percentile, height in the 90th, and has has been free of her Crohn's symptoms (fever, diarrhea, weight loss) for more than a year. Since we want to decrease the formula, we are re-reading this book and trying to more closely follow his advice. Over the past year and a half, we have become much more educated and so we have returned to Dr. Hunter. Diet does matter because bacterial balance is key. The medications simply complicate the situation in the GI and spin the disease out of control. Formula plus diet calms the system and restores normal functions. Sure, it's hard to follow a diet, especially for a kid. But we see this time as an investment in her health and instruction on how to manage her condition for life.

The Natural way to beat this debilitating disease

It seems that when ever you have a health problem the quick fix of throwing drugs at it is the option you are only given. It is true that drugs do have a role to play in helping us with disease but a there is often a price to pay in terms of side effects and damage to other structures within the body. It is also often the case that they are only alleviating the symptoms and not dealing with the cause. Prof John Hunter has looked at what seems to be the process going on in Crohn's and UC and worked out a way to deal with that problem by diet rather than a lifetime of heavy duty steroids and immunosuppressants. However he also covers those very drugs that are used so you understand that option and also the other joint, eye, and hearing issues which my gatroenterologist seems feel is outside her area of expertise.

Emphasis on Diet is Nice Change of Focus from Other IBD Books

The author practices in the U.K., where I believe dietary treatment of Crohn's is more common than in the U.S. Appreciated the sections on elemental diet and returning to food (specifics on implementing an exclusion diet). Good amount of discussion on theories about bad bacteria in the gut and what could fuel it or starve it. Also thought that the explanations of why things work were pitched just right for me (scientific concepts communicated in layperson's terms). He profiles the differences in treatment, diagnosis, etc. in Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis throughout. I would have liked some cites to the research studies noted, since some of his views differ from other books I have read. In general this was very helpul.

The Easy Road is accepting what is good

Focus written by Margie Fleurant is a book to help the read identify what distractions they have in their lives that is hurting their spiritual life. The book contains ten enemies of our spiritual walk.

Offense is holding on to hurts instead of letting them go.
People-Pleasing is trying to please other people, rather than pleasing God.
Self-Absorption is focusing on our inabilities, rather than believing God is powerful enough to help us overcome them.
Focus On The Past is one of the man distractions we have. Satan loves to remind us of our past hurts and failures. God forgives our past.
The Easy Road is accepting what is good, doing small things. God has called us to do great things, more than we could ever imagine.
The Noise Of The Enemy is paying attention to troubling thoughts we have. Are these our thoughts are those from the devil.
Discouragement comes to us when things happen in our lives to get in the way of accomplishing our goals. Putting our hope in Jesus enables us to get past this and focus on our destiny.
The Treasures Of The World and focusing on money gets in the way of the true riches we get from God. Many people spend their lives striving to make more money to buy more things, but they are not happy because of it and they want more.
Reliance On Our Own Works is focusing on doing good works rather than spending time with God.
Weariness happens when we become overwhelmed by difficulties in our lives. We need to take time to rest our physical bodies to stay healthy and we much put our trust and faith in God for complete rest.

This is a great book! The author uses scripture through out the book to support what she is say. There are so many places in this book that made me stop to think about my life and the stumbling blocks I have getting in the way of my spiritual journey. The author compares our spiritual journey to that of a runner training and focusing on running a race. We are not to let distractions get in our way or lose sight of our final destiny – our relationship with God.

Margie Fleurants' FOCUS is a training course for me after thirty years of reading the
bible on my own. Her textbook intense research with twenty-five end-notes is very complete; with many scriptures to back up her principles of wisdom and understanding for ones everyday life yet written in layman terms. It encourages us to focus on the finish line like a marathon runner in the Kingdom of God; not to look to the right or left but to keep ones eyes on the end to win. She explains that we are spiritual beings that must look to our futures not just here on earth but for eternally. In part two her "Ten Enemies of Spiritual Vision" that name distractions to our call in this life are enlightening. They are a must read if one wants to finish the race God has called one too! I personally feel stronger, more determined to run my race after reading this book and I highly recommend it to all Christians that may be weary in well doing.

I really enjoyed this book there was some really interesting history as well as some fun tricks to play on your friends or an unsuspecting stranger. As for making money off this as long as your not betting with the wrong person or for stakes that are too high you probably will leave the bar etc...with your fingers intact. And remember, always buy the loser a drink or beer afterward, it spreads goodwill and you just might be able to hustle them again!

I love it!

Personally, another boring book on how to draw a photographic likeness is not what I was looking for... and this book is exactly what I wanted. I've been painting for many years so I know how to paint a likeness, but I want more. Willem de Kooning used to draw with his left hand, and with his eyes closed to shake himself out of the boring, and find some surprise in his work. I want to shake my hand out of the usual route so well known. This book will do it. The exercises are not all new, but some I hadn't used before and they do work. Books are like art, I guess... it's a personal thing. I am really glad I found this book!!! Many color photos, exercises that are easy to do and don't take a lot of materials, so if you're open to trying something new, buy this book!

Exciting book for the serious artist

I received my copy in the mail today and am very impressed. This is a rare thing: an art instruction book for the serious artist who is more interested in expressiveness than in creating a painting that "looks like something". In fact, the image on the book cover is the most "pretty" and "recognizable" of all the illustrations in the book (with the exception of the writer's final self-portrait at the end of the book). In a way, the cover image is misleading precisely because it is "prettier" than most of the images in the book. So if you find the cover image not to your taste you definitely will not like the other images in this book.

Where this book excels is in helping you become looser and more expressive in your art. The chapter on what to do when your become stuck or discouraged in your art work was particularly good, and timely for me. The author also writes about colleagues and teachers who have been instrumental in her development, and what she has learned from them. All in all, the book reminded me of college-level art classes that I have taken, where the emphasis is on experimentation, personal expression and avoiding cliched conventions.

This is not a book that will show you how to draw or paint a recognizable portrait. There are exercises, but not of the "how to" or "step by step" variety. One drawback of the book is that the exercises are not always illustrated (i.e. it tells you try this, then try that, but it doesn't always show you examples of what each step in the process might look like).

There is a lot more writing in this book than in the typical art instruction book. The author discusses the technique, process and content of all the illustrations in much the same way that you might in a class critique. Some of the work illustrated is challenging to appreciate (another reviewer called it "rubbish", and although I don't share her opinion, I do understand her point).

I noticed a few typos that the proofreader missed. One funny one was when she wrote that the artist might be "drawing and panting". At least I think it was a typo!

Because this book is written by a UK author, there is some terminology that will be unfamiliar to North American readers. I had to Google "what size is A1 paper" (answer: 23 x 33 inches, roughly the size of a sheet of watercolour paper), although I could figure out that a "rubber" is an eraser.

I ordered my copy from The Book Depository because even with shipping charges it was considerably cheaper than ordering directly through Amazon. The book came very quickly and in perfect shape.

I only read the coupled lines section on this book. It is very good. The only reason I give 4 stars is because that's the only part I read. I can not comment on the other subjects.
