About the Author
Benjamin Keen (PhD, Yale University) was professor Emeritus from Northern Illinois University. He was a leading scholar in the field of Latin American history, particularly the colonial period in Mexico. Although retired from active teaching for some years, Keen continued to research, write, and lecture until his death in late 2002.
Keith Haynes (PhD 1981 Northern Illinois University) is Professor of History at The College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York, where he has taught Latin American and U.S. diplomatic history for more than 20 years.

This book is not a "user friendly" as a stand alone book. I'm a second year college student majoring in history and if I'd not had sociology and political science classes, and an excellent professor, some of the material would have been way beyond me. The author uses a lot of higher level verbiage, which to a student who might be taking a humanities course that utilizes this book, would be pretty challenged.
The course I took used Keene's companion book of primary documents which provided more insight on discussions in the book. I feel to get the most out of this book, the companion one is necessary. I believe there are other books that are probably better than this one such as the Penguin History of Latin America. Additionally the author injects quite a bit of liberal bias in this book. The questions posed at the beginning of each chapter are difficult to ferret out the answers to in the text. And to my final comment on the book, I was not the only student in the class that complained about the complexity of the book. It covers sociological problems, economic, and political problems all at once which can be overwhelming. Too many aspects under one cover. The only thing I am impressed with besides the companion book, is the use of formal/proper terms in the text such as Caudillo's, vaqueiro's, etc. That I did appreciate.

incredible choice for an introduction

This book was required for a college course on Latin American history. Unfortunately we were only able to use the first half of the book during the course. About two years after graduation I picked up the book and finished from where I left off. The final eight chapters are captivating and incredibly informative. Well written with an objective presentation.

Very interesting book!

Out of all the books I'm required to read for school this semester, this is the one book I can't put down. I like how the author details the events and sums up everything nicely. Interesting book in my opinion.
