14 months, 170 workouts, and 30 lbs later...

Fourteen months ago, my size 12 blue jeans were starting to feel just a little bit more than tight. I had just seen the pictures of myself at my sister's wedding...and they weren't pretty. They made me realize that I had gone from always having been extremely slender to well, to put it politely, junoesque.
I started this program March 4, 1999, after reading an excerpt from Strong Women Stay Slim in the Reader's Digest. I was looking for a program that I could do for the rest of my life. It had to be one that did not involve going to a gym, since I have a 100% failure rate with exercise dependent on a gym. It had to be one that helped me drop the 30 lbs. I had picked up since taking a sedentary job in the suburbs. It had to be forgiving of my sometimes irregular schedule. It had to get me back in shape for my 25th high school reunion.
After six weeks of following the exercises in the Reader's Digest Article, I was already seeing results, so I bought Strong Women Stay Young, and added the ankle weight and abs exercises from the book to my program. I also started taking the stairs at work instead of the elevator, and walking to the store instead of driving. (I did do the program an average of three times a week, rather than the recommended two.)
By the time my high school reunion rolled around, I had dropped the extra 30 lbs (without dieting -- just sensible eating). So many people at work have commented in the change in my appearance and have asked how I did it, that I've taken to carrying Reader's Digest reprints of the original article around to hand out when asked. My thighs and my upper arms have slimmed down and firmed up. My belt went from too tight on the largest hole to too loose on the smallest. I continue to get stronger and to improve my sense of balance. And my jeans are now a size six...
Some of the other reviews raise concerns that this program is too mild to be effective. Perhaps that's true, if you're looking for serious bodybuilding, or want to train for a marathon. But as for me, I wanted to be stronger and slimmer. I am. I wanted a program that I would actually do, instead of one that I would drift away from. Fourteen months later, I'm still working out. My experience is that this works, if you actually do it.

A Wonderful Book

After 18 years of increasing disability with CFIDS/Fibromyalgia and a brain injury in 1997, I was a mess.
A friend sent me a copy of this in 1998, and it helped turn my life around.
I went from being so weak I was barely able to do one set of 8 reps (with NO weights), to outgrowing first 3 lb, then 5 lb, then 10 lb hand and ankle weights.
Despite the unpredictable and cyclic nature of my illness, I'm able to keep up my strength when I'm doing well, and rebuild it quickly and easily after relapses.
I've recommended this book to family, friends, and even one of my doctors, and have yet to find anyone who didn't benefit from it.

A Gift for yourself and anywoman of any age

This well researched book explains how to do something reallypositive for your body no matter what your age. I love that this canbe done at home with a minimum of investment in equipment. (hand weights and adjustable ankle weights) The program is designed to make the most of your time, so two forty minute workouts a week is all it takes to make you strong, increase your balance and increase bone density. This is a book I've recommneded to my mom, and all my friends, no matter how old and how young. Note that this is a starting off point for weight training. If you already do it on a regular basis the exercises may not excite you but the research behind it is interesting.

Great introduction and overview

This is the newest, most comprehensive overview of the ideas of Whorfian and neo-Whorfian linguistics available. It is written for a specialist audience, but is nevertheless readable and convincing in its arguments and exposition. Too bad it is so expensive. But worth the price if you are interested in this topic. I can't think of a better book on the subject.

First off, I've got to say this: this book is beautiful! The outside cover is ugly, in my opinion, but the interior design more than makes up for it.

Besides looking beautiful on the inside, this book is also written beautifully. These authors have a way with words, and they know it! Although the title has "spellbook" in it, only half of the book is devoted solely to spells. The other half has various chapters on spellcraft history, correspondences, divination, numbers, chants, magical alphabets, singing, dancing, knot magic, kitchen witchery, making poppets, making amulets and talismans, and much more! There are illustrations throughout that show the steps for the dances, musical notes, sigils, etc. that are discussed in the book. This book is exploding with spellcraft wisdom and I think that any spellcaster could find something of interest inside.

The spells themselves are quite interesting as well. Some are taken from ancient sources and are made useful for the modern witch. To show you how versatile this spellbook really is, the spells range from "To Reveal the Identity of a Thief" to "To Lure People to Your Website." There are also some personal stories of how some of the spells worked. That was an added plus and I think that every spellbook should include those. If you buy a spellbook, wouldn't you be interested if the author actually tried their own spells? I know I would.

In conclusion, a wonderful addition to any spellcaster's library!

I've read hundreds, and this is the BEST!

The woman who gave this book 2 stars (below this) can't spell and made up false quotes from it.

I love this book, you've got to buy it! This is the best book I've ever read about magic and I've read hundreds.

Its woodcuts haunt me (like the one of Miles Standish pointing angrily at the pioneer Pagans dancing around a Maypole in early American colonial times).

These people know what they're writing about. Their personal stories of magic experiences, teaching, and helping others are fascinating and inspiring.

They worded the history section (Scope) explaining the class, economic, and political upheavals that caused magic's persecution so well, I can now say I really understand (I never really got it before).

The how-to section (Skills) has stuff I've never seen before. Off the top of my head... I was glad for the Witch dance steps, the secret Witch words. Now I know how to make people mad, sad, or happy using music and how to make my own herbal medicines.

The Spells section has charms that are really useful and make sense because they explain the reasons behind them, instead of just giving the recipes like so many other books. They're real spells from all over the world (some I even recognize from my grandmother).

Sometimes, rarely, a classic can be recognized from the moment it is published. "The Goodly Spell Book," like "The Art of French Cooking," or "The Elements of Style," is such a work.

As Julia Child did in the former, Deerman and Rasmussen organize, consolidate and instruct without condescension. And like "Elements" author Strunk, they take refinement of written language to a pleasurable max.

The result is a readable compendium of the dustiest, rarest and hardest-to-fathom old books . It's an instruction manual that takes readers from spellcraft 101 to the outline for their graduate course. And it's a cookbook that can be followed by anyone with a few tools and the daring to try.

"Goodly"'s clear tables and copius footnotes make it an excellent reference for fast look-ups, and an index to the old classic works. Its introduction to magickal principles -- the first half of the book -- makes basic principles clear to any novice, yet covers a breadth that will abash most initiates.

Sections like the correspondences of planets to musical modes and specific sound, make accessible layers of power previously unknown to all but a few.

"Goodly"'s second part is stuffed with historic recipes enhanced by long use, and new spells adapted from time-tested charms. Annotated with shopping lists and "why it works" explanations, it's perfect for browsers-of-oddities and the I-know-it-alls who read books from the back page to front.

For most readers interested in magick, this single title will replace an entire shelf of difficult to read, rambling tomes. The rest -- esoteric wizards and fanatic bibliophiles -- will buy it to be sure their collection is complete.

This book is good, but only scratches the surface. That being said, it's the perfect starting point for anyone who's interest has even by slightly piqued by flat earth; whether it's for a laugh at the daft "flat-earthers" or for a genuine concern of the truth. For half millennium now, The term flat earth has been synonymous with crazy, but I challenge you to read this book, do some investigating yourself and see what you discover. It will blow your mind, how the absurd becomes the sensible. The lucidity of flat earth will humble your intellect. If you can get past your ego, you will never see the world the same; on multiple levels. Consider yourself warned.

A blockbuster truth teller!

This is well written, informative read. I highly recommend this book. The author successfully lays to rest the myth that White America became wealthy by their entrepreneurial spirit, and hard work, but instead, government and private enterprise harmonized to institute a series of "affirmative action" initiatives which gave white people exclusive material advantages that have nothing to do with merit or hard work ( while at the same time advancement for African Americans progress was aggressively, and oftentimes, violently sabotaged).

Read this book! Size can be misleading!

A small book power-packed with information. It draws on a time-line from the theft of indigenous people's land, to chattel slavery to present day racial bias. It documents the schemes whites in power have used and continue to use including facts you may never heard of prior to reading this book. If you are curious about the root of white supremacy or want to broaden your understanding of the foundations of white oppressive techniques this is the book for you.

An eye opening account of capitalism and how it has destroyed the poor

As I read the book I did notice some very angry feelings by the author . I can verify most statements and taking away His subjective anger concur the book should be read by the poor and disenfranchised they need to understand that we will never see a savior we need to save ourselves.

About the Author
During her time managing one of the largest equestrian facilities in Michigan, bomb-proofing expert Nelly Cooper spent thirteen years helping scared and injured riders regain their confidence. Believing we can do better as an industry to prevent accidents, she wrote this book out of love and respect for all the horses and horse people she's met throughout her life.  Nelly and her sweetheart Gerald, along with their cats, dogs and horses, live in Grand Rapids, MI.

Good info, but at times harsh.

As a certified riding instructor, I was interested in this book. There has always seemed to be a gap in riding instruction. That gap is leadership and ground/barn lesson instruction because students are so ready to ride. This book helps fill that gap, but it makes references to your horse must "fear" you. I believe the correct way is for your horse to respect you. I cannot fully condone this book for the references to hitting your horse to make them fear you. I get what the author is saying and do believe in self preservation of the handler but there are better ways to get that point across. As the author does say, the best thing you can do is find a reputable instructor to help you with your overall horsemanship. Find one willing to do groundwork exercises and you will be prepared to enjoy riding?

Great little book to help with despooking and being a leader!

This book has some great ideas on despooking your horse and ways to become the "Alpha" leader you need to be. Most of it is common sense if you have much horse handling experience but they served as good little reminders. There were some good despooking ideas and illustrations.

Overall I'm glad I got the book but it won't answer all your questions...but a good starter for sure!

This book is a must buy, must read! Over flowing with information to help riders, students, instructors and even parents of students learn valuable information about the horses we love. Great photos, easy reading. Love that it is great for even young students to read. My students will be reading this book!
