About the Author
During her time managing one of the largest equestrian facilities in Michigan, bomb-proofing expert Nelly Cooper spent thirteen years helping scared and injured riders regain their confidence. Believing we can do better as an industry to prevent accidents, she wrote this book out of love and respect for all the horses and horse people she's met throughout her life. Nelly and her sweetheart Gerald, along with their cats, dogs and horses, live in Grand Rapids, MI.

Good info, but at times harsh.

As a certified riding instructor, I was interested in this book. There has always seemed to be a gap in riding instruction. That gap is leadership and ground/barn lesson instruction because students are so ready to ride. This book helps fill that gap, but it makes references to your horse must "fear" you. I believe the correct way is for your horse to respect you. I cannot fully condone this book for the references to hitting your horse to make them fear you. I get what the author is saying and do believe in self preservation of the handler but there are better ways to get that point across. As the author does say, the best thing you can do is find a reputable instructor to help you with your overall horsemanship. Find one willing to do groundwork exercises and you will be prepared to enjoy riding?

Great little book to help with despooking and being a leader!

This book has some great ideas on despooking your horse and ways to become the "Alpha" leader you need to be. Most of it is common sense if you have much horse handling experience but they served as good little reminders. There were some good despooking ideas and illustrations.
Overall I'm glad I got the book but it won't answer all your questions...but a good starter for sure!

This book is a must buy, must read! Over flowing with information to help riders, students, instructors and even parents of students learn valuable information about the horses we love. Great photos, easy reading. Love that it is great for even young students to read. My students will be reading this book!
